The lower the sym bol in Che alphabet, the greater the amount of the annual insurance preinimum. It was proposed that all pre-1942 cars have the same symbols as those plSded on comparable 1942 models for collision insurance. However, no change of more than two symbols would be made. A public hearing was held by the Department of . Insurance on Sep tember 21, 1949, to consider these proposals. It was brought out at the hear ing that the pre-war private pas senger cars are not paying their part of the losses on collision cov erage. At the close of the hearing the commissio'ner requested addi tional statistics to be filed with the department for justification of this claim. A thorough study of the facts broug.ht out at the public hearing has Kisulted in approval of the fil ing wi^li respect to fire, theft and comprehensive, resulting in a con siderable overall reduction to poli cyholders. Witxi respect to the collision fil ing and on the basis of a study by the Insurance Department of infor mation furnished by the North Car olina Fii e Insurance Rating Bu reau, the department has approved their filing for changes in collision rates, resulting in an overall reduc tion at an estimated saving of $527,797. The effective date of this filing will be contained in the new auto mobile manual which is now in the hands cf the printers and ryhich will ba distributed by the North Carolina Fire Insurance Rating Bu reau to the agents and .companies just as soon as it has been received. ing a storage house which will hold 1500 bushels of certified seed of Se quoia and Essex. I SALE OF LOT OF LAND Sequoia Potatoes In Strong: Demand Grov'ers of certified Sequoia po- ta-to seed in Avery County are con tinuing to find a good market for their product in Tennessee, Virginia and the two Carolinas, reports H. R. Niswonger, in charge of horti culture extension at State College. In fact. says Niswonger, the growers are unable to meet the de mand for their product. They re cently sold 7,000 bags of seed po tatoes in the four states, and could have sold another 7,000 bags if the potatoes had been available. Some 15 or more new growers will produce certified seed of this va riety in 1950. A grower i'n the Vale community, .John Calhoun, this year tried the Essex variety, which was developed by the New York Experiment Sta tion lor resistance to late blight. He expects, to harvest around 500 busheis’. Calhoun brought 34 bu shels of certified Essex seed in 1948 and produced enough seed to plant 1.7 acres this year. The Vale farmer also is growing 10 acres of Sequoias and expects to harvest around 20,000 bushels of this variety this year.
