Chatham KecorJ, Instead of restoring to the people of the several counties of North Carolina the "right of loua' self-government," the late "reform" Legislative has real ly abridged and- restricted that right more turn -any previous Legislature had evr dared to do. Heretofore, un der our m ich bused democratic sys tem of county government, the affurs of eery county were managed by a boi d of county commissioners and the - board of justices of the- peace jointly. But now, under this new "reform" system, the. magistrate have no vote or voice whitever in the management of their county, 'lhe entire and exclj si ve control and management of every e.ounty is now entrusted to the c- 11 missMoners alone, three of whom atje .elected by the people and two may be appointed by tne judge of the district. NEITHER REPS. NOR POPS. SAT ISFIED WITH THE LEGISLA TURE FUSION A FAILURE. Rockingham Index, Republican. Their the fusion 'Legislature's fl- delity to party surpassed its fidelity to principle. The body was elected as an economi cal one. It has proven itself to be a most extravagant one. It was elected to reduce the expenses of the State and abolish certain offices, it has created mora ofliies and increased the State's expenses. The body was elected by the people of lhe State to fight trusts and combines. It has provedj it&elf to be the willing tool of these monsters. A tlegreeof ''grabbiu up" everything possible was plainly evident in a (great many members. Dissension and disagreement are resultant from this fusion experiment. Neither the Republicans nor the Popu lists are satisfied with the recent Legis lature. The princ'ples of the two parties are two entirely distinct and different things and in '96 each party should g its own way rejoicing, if it can. The Legislature, happily defunct, failed to satisfy the good people of North Carolina, and was consequently unsuccessful iu its mission. It was the output and development of fusion, therefore both are miserable fai. tires and should be despised by good members of both parties. No more fusion. ILLINOIS DEMOJRATH WILL AN NOUNCE THEIR POSITION OS . THE FIXAXU.4.L QUESTION! Chicago Times -Herald. PRlNGFifxn, III., April 4. Rv a vote of 17 to 3 the democrat io state cen tral committee of Illinois todar resoiv ed to call a state convention vVedaes day, June 5Ji, at Springrield. the m au ing of which is construed bv tnny leading democrats to commit the dem ocratic party iu Illinois to free silver coin aj e and begin the campaign of.13 9(5 upon that issue Aoting upon t)ie very positive deci-ion of the co-nmir-tee, the following ollicial call wasis-ued tonight and will bj sent to the chair mtn of every county cemral C(m u;t tei in the state: "To the Oemocr icy of Illinois Tin: only uatioiial q irtsr.io.i i.ow before tint American people is tha't of the curren cy. The war's over, 'the foieebill i repealed never to be re-enacted. Tarl.T legit-lition of a general character will uot be attemp ed for several year. The next national I campaign ruu.-t be fought out with the cunency as the isue between the parties, and it be hooves the deniocrstlc ;arty ai u pa-rtv to assu.'ne a decided podtion on tliis que-tion .nd to draw it pirry lines ac cording to the wirlie of a m j n ity of its members. The basic principles of democracy forbid the decision of im portant questions by the party leaders witliout instructions from the people, and it is therefore proper for this com mittee to call on the damocrats of the precincts, townships and counties of this state to meet in convention in their respective localities, to discuss, freely, ' the great question before the people, to give expression to their views in appro priate resolutions and to select de'ler j gates to a convention to beheld at the state capital. In order that the pro ceedings of the democracy ai a party be regular, it is suggested that each county committee in the state cull a convention of the democracy of the county for the purpose as stated abovt ; the time and place for holding such, convention to he nxed by the commit tee, but its should be previous to the date of a state convention to be held at Springfield ou the ach day of June, 1895. Such convention will be compos ed of one delegare for each 300 votes or fraction of 150 theieof cast for Ber nard Claggett for state treasurer at the last election. The democrats of the state are urged to turn out to these meeting, ana to give fiee expression to their' views, in order that tbre may. be no doubt as to the position of the party on this great and important ques tion ." This cah is signed by Chairman H'tn ricbsen aud Secretrry Nelson. NEARLY ALL FOR CONVENTION. There was little oppotion to the. propo-ition for a state c invention. The committeemen voting against the reso lution were: Ex-Congressman V. II. Forman, of Nashville; ii. E, Spauler and Adam A. Goodrich, of Chicago. M3"or John P. Hopkins was present during the early part of the meeting, but was compelled to catch a train for Chicago before the vore was taken. He had urged a postponement of action for twenty dayn, but it is claimed that he would have voted for the rsolu tion. The convention will be composed of about 830 delegates, of which 253 wi,U come from Cook county. It will readi' ly be seen that the country democrats will easily control te conveniio 1, and It is claimed that thry will be practi cally a unit in favor of a platform de claring for (Le freo and unlimited, coinage of silver at the ratio of 1C to l without regard to the acion of any other government on earth. The f silver men are apparently in the sad dle. Cnairnrin Tanner, of the republican rate cpntral committee, ishete tonight and affects to assume that the conven tion will not amount t much, but it is the belief of country members. of the legislature, both democrats and repub iii"ns that the convension will be one -f t he most notable political events -th it 1 :ve occured In Illinois for a decade. The news of the action of the com mittee rapidly spread among the men hers of the legislature and elicited the liveliest Hr.d of comment. Country democrats were jubilant.
