I ' - Entered at the postotilce at Salisbury, X. C. as second-class mail matter. - Editor J. P. Caldwell, of the Charlotte Observer, in reply to the question from the Xew York World as to whether or not in his estimation Cleveland is the logical candidate of his party fqr the coming contest, replies that he believes there are stronger men than Cleveland who could be nominated. The citv fathers have done well in providing a city hall and every cent spent in its construc tion wTili be approved of by the taxpayers of Salisbury. Xow give us electric lights. We need more light and there is no question about that. Let our commissioners take heed of this matter in the same energetic and progressive spirit which lias marked the present admin istration and the people will ap plaud them. Cuba has issued bonds. The securities have been engraved and the Cuban government has advertised for sealed proposals for them. There is in anticipation a total issue of 10,000,000 but only 2,000,0.00 w ill be put on the market now. Kew York financiers express a willingness to take a part of the bonds. From the New York World we clip the following recital gov erning the payment of principle and interest by the Cuban gov ernment. The recitals in the bond make the principal due ten years after the evacuation of the Island of Cuba by the Spanish forces, and all revenues are pledged to the payment of principal and interest. It, is to be understood that while the time is specified for the redemption of the con pons, payment may be deferred -liiitil six months after evacua- ion by Spain. They are to be receivable as taxes in propor tion of one-fith. There is no upset price, but no bid under GO per cent of the face value will be received. This reservation indicates that if the securities are floated at all, there will be at least a fair return for the promise of the belligerents. Call on Theo. F. From all indications it looks very much as if Senator Butler will carry the day over the Re publicans. The Populist Exec utive Committee met at Raleigh vesterday and a committee was appointed to confer with a sim ilar committee from the Repub lican paity for. the purpose of effecting fusion. The trend of affairs showed that the Popu lists would not concede an inch of ground to the Republicans ind that thev must have the Governor. Buck Kitchen, who is not by any means a big horse in the camp but whose position serves to illustrate the prevailng sentiment among the Populists, says: 'There will be fusion on the State ticket; the Populists will hold to their demand for Gov ernor and the RepubMcsns will concede this despite all the pres ent denials." This is in perfect harmony with what Senator Butler has said all along. And the Raleigh correspondent of the Charlotte Observer says that many Re publicans openly assert that they are willing to concede so "much to the Populists. In con nection with this.it is interest ling to note what Chairman Hol ton has to say. From the same source from which we obtain the above we get his opinion of the situation: "Republican Chairman Hol ton said that he was informed that the sentiment at the meet ling was for fusion and that the Populists would stand to thoir demand for Governor. He de clared most positively that the ( Republicans would never con cede this and that the result was easy to foresee; that it was a case of an irresistable force act ing on an immovable body." But it must be remembered that Mr. Holton represents the minority element of his party. A majority has signified its willingness to accept fusion on any terms and it is easy to fore- 1 1 j see that Mr. Holton and his fol" ! lowers will he listed as hnrVk numbers when the summing up occurs. v What power Marion Butler has over the Republican party of North Carolina! He has snapped his finger, cracked his whip and they, are falling in line to do his bidding. It seems almost incredible that men could be brought under such absolute control. But from all appear ances it has been done. And all that is left now is for the G. p. P. to take their fare in c the best grace possible, w-hieh at the best can be tut poor grace- It is stated now that the free silver forces, in the event they are in the npjority at the Chi cago convention, are planning to change the rule which re- j quires a two thirds vote to nomi nate a candidate, and will give the majority this power. This change has anything but a a wholesome flavor to it. Mrs. J. W. Mauney can accommo date boarders either table or room, or both at her home on Main street. . Swift's Silver Leaf is the C most popular Lard on the market. Mr. Switterda' School. Earlv in the eighteenth cen tury a Mr. Switterda announces that ladies and gentlemen who desire in a very short time to speak Latin, French or High Dutch fluently, and can spare but two hours a week, will be faithfully taught by him ac cording to a very eav and de lightful method, full, plain, most expeditious and effectual. "Every one," he continues, "is to pay according to his quality from 1 to -i guineas a( month, but: he (Mr Switterda) will readier agree by the great." A good contrast to the above is the plain and homely description description of "a school about 40 miles from London. The master has had much success with, boys, as there are almost 40 ministers, and masters that were his scholars. His wife also teaches girls Jacemaking, plain work, raising paste, sau ces and cooking to a degree of exactness. His price is 10 or 11; the year, with a pair of sheets and one spoon, to be re turned if desired." Cornhill Magazine.
