St. Matthew's Sunday cichool held a picnic on Ascension Day, May 17th, pt Wyatt's Ferry in Morgan town ship. There was a large crowd in at tendance and the pastor, Rev. H. A. Trexler, made an address which was greatly appreciated by the audience. There was a dinner and boating en dulged in by the young people, and all in all one of the most enjojyable days in the history of the community was held. China Grove Woman Dies Here. Mrs. W. E. Waggoner, of China Grove, died here Saturday after an illness of some days. The remains were taken to Concordia and the fun eral and interment was at that place Sunday. Mr. Theo. Jenkins, of Gastonia, spent Sunday in the city with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. R. Jenkins. Mr. Oldham Clark, who is in the hospital with a case of fever is doing nicely. Waco Times ,000 TO COMMISSION Meets Requirement in Order to Par ticipate in Federal Highway Money and County Will Get $10,000 Committee to Arrange Tax Rate for 1917 At a calj meeting or the board of county commissioners, held Thurs day and at which all memlbers were present, the following business was transacted: It was ordered that Mr. C. M. Hen derlite be given an order for two car loads of Virginia coal at $6.00 p ton. Chairman Hall and Superintendent Thomason were appointed to confer with T. H. Knox relative to sidewalk and hedge. Register of Deeds J. C. Deaton was authorized to go to Morganton to see what could be done regarding the ap plication of the county for admission of Mrs. Victor Hodge to the State hospital. (iMr. Deaton was in Mor ganton yesterday and succeeded, in having the application favorable passed on.) Campibell's bridge across the Yad kin river wasx ordered repaired. The sum of $1,000 was appropriat ed to the .State Highway Commission, this (being ten per cent, of the amount to be apportioned for this county of $11,000, as the $1,000 will be refund ed to the county by the State High way Commission. Application was mide to the board for the use of the Community Build ing auditorium for- a concert by the orphan class from Oxford orphanage and this was cheerfully granted. It was ordered that in place of us ing the change of road as reported by the .committee, from near J. K. Goodman's barn through Mt. Ulla, that said road he used as it now is, crossing the railroad at the roller mill and again beyond the station. This action was taken on account of the . stringent financial condition of the county. It was ordered that Messrs. Hall, Fleming, Gray and County Auditor Neave meet with the county attorney, Kerr Craige, Esq., to fix the tax rate for 1917. It was agreed that two pigs be pur chased for each of the county camps to be fed on refuse from the camp kitchens and when killed the meat be sold and proceeds turned into the county treasury. Krider has the regis tration blanks and other matter nec essary to the registration for the con scription in securiqgaparniyi in the present war with Germany. All men between the ages ot ax and 30 years will he required to register on June 5th, the day; designated yesterday by the, Presint as; registration day un der the act passed by congress. Af ter the registrars complete their work the blanks will be forwarded to the proper authorities and those who are to be exempt will be singled out. The-sheriff has been in possession of the blanks and otner papers for some weeks but was instucted to keep them well secured and not to make it known that they were in his keep ing until after the President hl signed the bill and announced the reg istration date. The registration books will be at everyt voting precinct in the county on June 5th and those 'who act as registrars will serve voluntarily anil without compensation, -rhere will be no trouble in securing men for this work, and already a number of mea have volunteered their services to the sheriff for this work.
