Honor to him. ' I War is the costliest game while it lasts that nations can play J Sometimes wars are more costly after they have ended than they were in waging. Representative Cannon estimates that if the presr ent war shall last a year it will re quire an outlay of $600,000,000. This estimate will be made more readily comprehensive by the statement that the expenditure will-be at the rate of two million dollars a day .for every working day in the year. Our ordinary expenditure for carrying on the civil service, paying pensions, etc.', wiH require another million dollars per diem. The taxpayers have a pretty stiff piece of work cut out for them, no matter how much Congress shall authorize the Treas ury to borrow to keep the guns bellowing until the Spaniards shall cry enough. K There are too many in this world who will not cast their bread hpon the water, unless they are as' sured beforehand that it will come back in a few days a full grown sandwich, all trimmed with ham, buttered and rolled up in a. war ranee deed for one half the earth and a mortgage on the other half. The work of paying off the troops at Tampa commenced Sat urday. Over $500,000 will be distributed in the next two or three days by eight paymasters who are there.
