was dark and wet, the victims, we
are told, “went cheerfully.” They ■
resided, it appears, in “the Levee”
or disorderly section of the town,
and had made lifea burden to their
neighbors by their uncongenial
proceedings. Still this could hard
ly justify contempt for legal pro-
ceedure. Barbarity will soon re
turn to this country if inefficient
officers are elected and their ineffi
ciency is made an excuse for vio
lence. Citizens of Warrensburg,
we are told, denounced the White
Cap disorder, but they did not in
terfere, resembling in this respect
citizens of Ohio and other States
in recent cases of lynching.

The Credit System.
The credit system, which has
been more abused than any other
great privilege that a free people
ever enjoyed, will have to be
amended or restricted in a great
measure if good results are to be
expected from it. The system
has been proven in most cases
a curse rather than a blessing, and
caused trouble, sorrow and heart
aches, where peace and happiness
might have reigned had there been
a strict inforcement of the rule
“Pay as you go.'' The credit
business has been the making of
many dishonest people, who have
taken advantage of trusting
friends. Some debtors think it an
outrage to be required or even
requested to pay their honest
debts, and they often take advan
tage of such laws as may be on
the statute books to beat the man
who has befriended them of need
