WILMINGTON NEGEOES UGLY.
They Surround The Office of The Nc-
gro Paper m Great Numbers.
Yesterday the Sun copied an
editorial from the Record a negro
paper at Wilmington, commenting
on the white women. It seems
that the editor of the Record is
about to get into trouble about the
piece. The following was sent the
Charlotte Observer from Wil
mington last night: Since early
night-fall great crowds of negroes
have been assembled, around the
office .of The Record., the negro
paper which has created so much
indignation here. The gathering
is supposed to be the result of a re
portthat an anonymous letter has
been sent to the negro editor,
warning him to leave town. I The
whites have paid very little at ten -
tion to the incident. Thus far no
demonstration has been made of
an exciting character, and the ne
groes have been comparatively
qjliiet. The whites aire ooofy but
determined. Thus far they h&ye
exercised a wonderful degree of
forbearance; but if the worst comes
they will do their duty and if .they
need help it will come with a
mighty run from, the surrounding
country. .
Gospel Meeting at China Grove.
China Grove, N. C,
August 24th, 1SIS.
iSlit. Editor: A series of gospel
leetings began here in the old
academy, now the Baptist meet
ing house, last Friday at 8 p. in.
The meetings were held in the
building at first, the congrega
tions being small; until buntuiy
night, when the crowd was too
large for its seating capacity. The
tent was erected Monday and was
well tilled at the evening meeting.
All Christian ministers and peo
ple had been invited to participate
in the servicesJ Rev. Mr. Morritt,
- '
the Methodist pastor, and Rev.
Mr. Shulenberge'r, the pastor of
the Reformed church, accepted
and have rendered . valuable, aid.
The former llreached twice and
the latter once, and both are giv
ing their prayers and inlluence to
the cause. Rev. Mr. Waketield,
the lrebyterian pastor, had an
engagement to aid in a meeting
elsewhere which has kept him
from being present bjit his pray
ers and influence are for the i suc
cess of the work and his people
are rendering their assistance, and
he will be here, toward' the last of
the week. I
Rev. J. 11. Booth, of Taylors-
ville, arrived Monday, but too late
for that service. He preached
two excellent sermons yesterday.
At night the tent was well tilled
with an enthusiastic audience who
listened to an earnest and power
ful sermori on "Repentance.'?
The congregations and the in
terest constantly increase, j
Rev. Mr. Booth will, preach at
11a. m. and 8 p. m. each day I dur
ing the remainder of the "meeting
which will continue until Sunday
at 11 a. m., probably longer.)
All are invited to attend, j
All Christians are requested to
pray that many souls may be
saved. i
Room will be made for alii that
come. . Respectfully,
J. N. Stallincs.
