Upon request Mayor Lord ead a part of the new town charter so . as to familiarize the members of the Board with the ordinances. Capt. W. C. Coughenour was, on motion, elected Mayor .protein. The election of city clerk and city auditor was postponed until next meeting. ; The salaries of the other city officers were fixed as follows: City : Attorney, $50; City Treasurer, $150; Keeper of cemetery for four months of the year to be $25 per i month, and $2 for each grave thereafter; City Weigher, one half Of the receipts; Sanitary in spector $1 per day; Policemen, $40 per month; Health Officer, $10 per month. A communication was read from Charles Barber, cob, asking the Board to refund his poll tax, and ? a petition was filed from Mr. Stroupe for license to conduct a restaurant in the building former ly occupied by Mr. Will Wallace on Council street. The Board then adjourned until Thursday night at 8 o clock. No 30th Celebration. '" It will be seen by a card from the health orbcers in tors paper that no gathering will bo allowed here between this date and the second of June. The city is quar rantined against the assembling of people and excursion trains and public carriers who would bring people here for such gathering. This does away w ith the 30th of May celebration. Woman Shot. A telephone mess-age from Spen cer this afternoon says a negi woman was shot by a negro man; the extent of the injury was not learned. Financial Report. A severe rain and- hail storm passed over this neighborhood Fri day night during'which lightning struck the telephone wire and ran in the house of Mr. W. T. Sum ner's damaging the battery and striking a gun standing near, com pletely demolishing the stock but "strange to " say did , riot dis charge the shells which the ..gun contained. Mrs. Allen Saf rit died at her home near here Wednesday night, May 10, 1899, age 4D years Mrs. Saf rit was a true and faithful member . of Mt. Hope Re form church. Her death was in deed a sad one and was exceeding ly shocking to her many friends. She. had been a kind and. loving wife of Mr. Saf rit's for nearly a score of years: Mrs. Saf rit pre ceeds her husband, aged mother arid two brothers to the grave and ieayes.mahy other relatives ; and numerous friends to mourn her sad death. She was held in high es teem and honor by all who knew her. Her illness was of short du ration and when she realized that death-was near she spoke very af fecting farewells to those who stood by her death bed. Her bu rial services were conducted at Mt. Hope to-day (Friday), by Her pas tor Rev. J. M. L. Lyerly, assisted by Rev. C. A. Rose, pastor of the kind husband. A large crowd4 was present to pay their last tribute of respect to the deceased. By her death Mt. Hope mourns the Joss of one of their most faithful mem bers. Mr. Saf rit has many friends who sympathize with him in, his hours of bereavement. XXX.
