We publish in our local columns to-day a communication from Co lumbus, Ohio, signed "A North Carolinian," in which is quoted fconie false statements made, it is asserted, by a negro minister hail ing from Salisbury. The preacher is reported as stating that "in the Wilmington trouble thirty men were shot down just i for fun," which is highly exaggerated; that ."fifty infants starved to death while their mothers were fugitives just outside the city," a statement unheard of before in this office. The description of the Jim Crow car is extremely ridiculous, in fact the law had scarcely gone into effect in North Carolina when the utterance was made. The maximum wages of the ne gro he .stated was "twenty-five cents per day and he can't get much work at that." This s is untrue those who labor receiving fair compensation, besides there are j 0 , many who will not worK tor any price. The assertions, in n to lynchings is a fabrication born of an evil mind, and made for evil purpose. Y e can hardly believe tliat a colored man a minister at that from Salisbury would make such statements; he must have imposed upon the contributor of the article as to his residence. Our correspondent, however, is a gentleman of honor and truth fulness and is worthy to be relied - i .. .1 upon xor any declarations ne may make. ' , An important opinion aflec- ? NEWS. The arbitrators at The Hague seem to be in the frame of mind of one v ho was bound to have peace if he had to fight for it. And when Vou come down to the5 fine thingi that is the way international arbitration will be accomplished. If the nations, of the world agree, that arbitration is the best method - of settling national and inter national difficulties and decide that in the event of any quarrel arising they will turn to and give the side tnat reiuse&to arbitrate a tnorougn whipping, there will be no refusals.
