Miss Ila Flows, of Roanoke, Virginia, was in Salisbury this morning. She left on the local train for a visit to her relatives at her old home at Flowes, Mr. G. L, Lyerly, of Lyerly, was in Salisbury today. He says nearly all the fiuit and early vege tables in his section were killed by the frost of Wednesday night. S. Blackmer has leased his home on Fulton street to Mr. Emile Clarka. Mr. Blackmer will leave on a preliminary trip to New York tomorrow. He will remove finally to New York about the last of May. Fenno, of New York City, who has been holding a series of meetings here during the past two weeks, closed the meeting last night at Salisbury and left today for Milwaukee, where he will conduct another meeting. Mr. W. R Allen, of the Land and Industrial Department of the Southern Railway, with headquar ters at Washington, together with Mr. F. C. Abbott, of Charlotte, were here yesterday on business connected with the proposed new building for the Spencer Young Men’s Christian Association. It is learned that 810,000 will be asked for for the erection of the building and that the Southern Railway will furnish a site free of charge. Mr. J. P. Pettyjohn, of the firm of J. P. Pettyjohn & Co., contrac tors, of Lynchburg, was here to day on business connected with the contract which his firm has to erect the new shop buildings. Much interest is felt in the meet ing tonight of those interested in the organization of a ball team for Salisbury. The meeting will be held in West’s barber shop at 7 o’clock and an organz ition will be perfected. It is expected to begin practicing either next week or the week after. LOCATION OF NEW SCHOOL. Will be Built on the Lot in the North Ward. Contractor Lazenby will begin in about ten days the construction of the new public school building, which wi’ cost complete about $20,000. There was some discus sion for a while with reference to a site but the city’s splendid prop erty in the North ward on which the present school stood was finally determined upon. Married in Salisbury THE REDEEMING FEATURE. How Dr Detwiler Was Saved by Rev Mr. Ware. Rev. Dr. G. H. Detwiler, who has been in Charlotte, returned to Salisbury this morning. “Where been, Doctor?” “Down home— Charlotte.” “How's that, down homel” “I’ll clear that up,” said Rev. W. R. Ware. “He has his wash ing done in Charlotte and you know that determines his resi dence.” When it is remembered that Dr. Detwiler is presiding elder of the Salisbury district, that his loyalty to Charlotte approaches sublime devotion, that Rev. Ware is pas tor of the First Methodist church of Salisbury and that Salisbury has a legal right to Dr. Detwiler— when all these facts are considered — it must be admitted that Mr. Ware’s clarification of the situation was timely, very timely. Budepest, April 22.— The strike of employes of the State railways continues. Both sides are deter mined not to give in. Washington, April 22 —The ac tion of Secretary Cortelyou,of the Department of Commerce and Labor, in signing the order re scinding the regulation of the Treasury Department limiting the duration of the salmon fishing in Southeastern Alaska, is giving general satisfaction. Under the present regulations fishing cannot be begun before July 1st of each year. The order signed today allows fishing as soon as salmon begin to run on the Alaskan coast. Trenton, N. J., April 21.-A jury in the United States Courts late tonight found a verdict of $13,- 500 damages for Jane Meegan, of Jersey City, who was injured in the ferryboat New Jersey, belong ing to the Pennsylvania Railroad, on February 28 1902. The New Jersey collided with the ferryboat Paesiac in a fog. There wa» a panic on board the New Jersey, and testimony showed that Miss Meegan was thrown down and trampled upon. While she has recovered from her superficial injuries there has developed a bad case of St. Vitus’ dance, from which it is alleged she will always suffer. She is wheel ed about in a chair. The immediate cause is said to be the report of Viceroy Alexitff in which he declared that Yinkow is included in the district under mar tial law. There is much speculation as to the location of the new poetoffice building. The postoffice inust be within a certain distance of the depot and the present quarters exhaust the distance limit. The rat’s head was cut off and the ring taken off It proved to Margaret Adams, to whom the ring was returned last evening.
