Thursday Januarv, 23, The papers are still talking about the sanity and marriageof Marv An derson. - We think they sould give iary a rest. There is no fun no- bread and A- iiikiAj in issuing a paper for bun combe, without pay. So we have come to the conclusion that it ia far better to isuea smaller niimberof pa pers arid get the money for them than h much greater number and lose the greater part earned. The exciteable and thoughtless in many of the large cities dipped their hands into their pockets and put up electric wires, dispensed with safe gas and adopted electric lights They are about as anxious to get rid of these dangerous wires and lights as they were to have them put up. : :- : President William P. St. John of the Mercantile National Hank, and Vice PreeidenLof the Southern 'Society,- in his eplanation of his resig nation of the, latter position says : "No Sou tji fern man of 'my a'ffl na tions," though I was only a boy du ring the period of the war, could, with any self respect, resent a trib ute to the high characterand person al worth of Mr. Davis, or to his title to veration by the Southern people." That is enough to fix his position ppects his..'c" rSPpT? i ir ftvK-wi-y Davis: 1 We understand that "a firetried Republican of this county has been removed as storekeeper of a distillery here, and a man from E wart's dis trict appointed in his stead.; and it's making the faithful howl. They, ask with great indignation, are there no Republicans in this county fit to fill the place? Is Ewart to boss this part of the political province? In deed, the Republicans of thes-e parts are sore and much chagrined at the management of things. A gen'tleman well posted in mat ters about Washington says the con nection of the.IIon. JamosG. Blaine with the Harrison Cabinet redeems it from the charge of hopless imbe cility, lie alone of all the cabal is regarded as at all above mediocre. It is thedjutt and ridicule of all parties. Mr. Harrison lias sunk ihtocontempt in proportion as he has reached ex alted station. Jle is regarded as the weakest Presidentwc have had for fifty years. He is a stupe;idus failure. Leading Republicans are ashamed of him, Democrats com miserate him and all -political per suasions ridicule him. Several papers appear to be exert ing themselves in the. Effort to get out the greatest number of pages : notably, the San Francisco Sunday Herald and theAtlanta Constitution. Jt is probably very gratifying for the publisher to make this show, but in point of utility it is ;l waste and fail ure Not one out of a hundred to whom a eoij of these lar.ro editions of 124 to ofj pagts are -add reused"' ever read more tnan the title pa-e. ' - M - V2T b.; ru.t, ,.t ,,.V-. : r , .i " The "National Democrat" is scat tering copies through these .parts. It is printed at Washington. It has a bad name to be a representative- of true Democracy. Then, if it last over a few months at Washington, It will be the first Democratic paper that has done so for nearly fifty years. Moreover, it is a mistake to suppose that we can get true Democratic principles from Washington only. The Democracy taught by our own leading State papers is very much purei and better. Our opinion, there! fore, is that it is "safer to patronizti home papers first and all the time. But if you must have outside papers get such as can be relied oUr-such as have established a reputation for truth and principle. But remember that every dollar thus sent out of the State an injury and a loss to you and all around you, and that if you would give a liberal patronage to your own local papers vou would soon make them all that could be de sired, and thus promote the -interest of your section, keep your money at home, encourage local enterprize and insure prosperity. - Every little drunken row" that oc curs in the South between whites and blacks is magnified into "a race conflict! " and the Southern news ga therers are just about as reckless as those of the North. It is wrong, it does no good, it intensifies feelintr. and is damaging to our section andi to both whites and blacks. There is no race conflict here and never has been as such. Th races on the earth that get along bet- ter together than than the Ax and the negro ; and we.mighff0 far ther and say that no two natyd'io teA succeed in living together, greater ,,ui,"u".' xiw3 is uob a mre asser tion, but a matter of history as jr refutable as the existence of Ethio pia itself. More espeaiiv is this true-in the South vhre these two races understand eah other. The negro race is not f turbulent nor bloodthirsty race. AWnnanVo ing, docile, rathT KO0(l natured and lovers of peacifaud (luiet: The little troubles that aMse 'between the two ,iUfe; x3ften produced by the more aggressive and exacting whites filled with liquor as by the retiring, less pugnacious, dark skin uubian. These people will always succeed better with the whites of the South than with any other people because they understand each other better. Their susceptibility amounts almost to criminality often in their eager ness tor change and novelty. This is manifested in allowing emigration agents to gull them and take them a way from their best friends to a -strange land. A Neav Rose. We have receiv ed from James Vick, Seedsman, Rochester, N. Y., some buds from the new rose, "Viek's Caprice." They are wonderfully beautiful and are indeed a novelty in roses. It is a true hybrid perpetual rose and per fectly hardy. We are assured that it. may be grown to perfection by the amateur equally well as by the pro fesinal florist. The flowers are large the ground color a soft, satiny pink, distinctly dashed and striped with white and carmine. It is wonder fully beautiful in the bud, too, being quite long and pointed, also showing the stripes and markings, to great .'ad-', vantage, making it a valuable- and desirable variety for cutting. All our readers who admire roses should have this new and rare one. Farm and Fireside. Send 10 cents for Tick's Floral Guide for 1890, which amount may be deducted from first order.
