There isa good deal said about the taking of the cen sus and converting it into a EDUCATIONAL. The advantages to be gain ed from the amendment pass ed r August 2nd are mani fold, but in no .way does it help the people of the State more thau in educating them. The General Assembly will increase the school fund great ly, and there will be no exN cuse ior a single person in North Carolina . not . being able to write and read in a year or two. 'Some of the op ponents to the adoption of the amendment said "that while poor uneducated white boys would be disfranchised in 1908, the negro would s6on learn to read and be able to vote." We are willing to risk that, and we believe that the white boy will give a good ac count of hiinself. ' This amendment" will stim ulate education, while the small boy is. being educated, his sister will receive like treatment. The General As sembly will pass a bill to keep the small children (under a certain age-out of the mills and then provide a school and thus give them educational advantages. We believe the time has come when North Carolina is' to be raised in the scale of knowledge, and the great bulk of illiteracy, which now is a shame to our State will in a great measure be re moved. We ask the State; to give this advantage to its' li&ye the public sentiment of the nation will sanction such an un holy movement, and' we believe that the repubXican party should undoflake td make this question an issue in the congressional dis trict the people will i return an overwhelming democratic inajori ty.Ghattanooga Times. Taking as trustworthy the infor mation given out from Washing top that there are only 16,000 men in the relief column now pressing towards Pekin, it is not strange that the allies had to fight for seven and a half -hours to defeat the Chinese in the first encounter and 1200 of the invaders were kill ed and wounded. It is a disgeace to civilization that only thi3 in significant army should be avail able for an advance after a month and a half of delay.;' It is a dis grace to the United States, with 60,000 or 65,000 trained troops in the Philippines, a week's journey from Taku, we would be represent ed in, the relief expedition by less than two thousand men. At this ' . rate, the massacre of the legations is to be reasonably expected. 'iSThe attempt to save them is disgust ingly weak. Norfolk Landmark, Dem, MR.
