It is nothing to the credit of McKinley that he has been pleasuring at Canton Ohio, while American soldiers and diplomats and missionaries have been tortured and mur dered in China. Had troops been rnsliea from the rhilip- piiies it might not have been, He has shown a censurable upconcern in Bucii momen-iiy, m I A tous events. Ex, : And wliilflhedoeanbthintf. er ue'and his cabinet eeem to think they can deal with this affair without the advice and direction of congress. What imperialistic ideas! R. INCONSISTENTLY F O R In response to a call issued a few days ago a number of gold Democrats and anti-im- discuss the methods of bring- ing a third party ticket be- fore the public. An address was adopted assailing Pres ident McKinley for his Phil- lipping policy and his "scan- appointments" to Fed erai office. characterizing ' Governor Koosevelt as tne frank embodiment of Mill- tarisin," "and- declaring that T ... r i.,ia the Republican party stands for all forms of suecial pnv- Iff. A. 1. puuing mis ucitei out mey will help elect . the RepublN -11-1. ,i i t. can cauuiuaies, auu know that Mr. Bryan can do nothing for the next four years with his financial poli- icy, as tnat was nxea ior mat length of time, at least, by tne last congress, in our opinion the other issues that are at stake, are more vital this year than the money question The people of the South especially will be the section which will receive the "scandalous appointments." As sure as McKinley is elec ted the "Force Bill" will be come a law, which means that we will again be put under Federal rule. Our older cit izens remember how it was under Canby just after the war when 40,000 of the best citizens of this State were secretly (ilrectinj? affairs here now in the State election which is resulting in the wholesale arrest of Demo cratic registrars. There will be more negro postmasters and negro office-holders in the South than ever before, i if McKinley is elected; be cause Roosevelt, who favors fl t'A t 1.1 social equality wnicn. is shown by Mb signing recent ly the bill which admits col ored children to the white schools) will nrge these ap pointments. The Republican party has always stood for a high protective tarif, which is the mother of trusts. To these are now added mili tarism, which has ever been the forerunner of and the upholder of an Empire, and the promoter of the i4ecanda lous appointments to federal office." The Democratic party has always opposed the above, and stands for the Republic. We think that every Demo crat should rally to the A 1 1 1 j. j sianuara ana mat every igold Democrat" can con scientiously vote., for Mr. Bsyan and save the Republic, notwithstanding his opposi tion to Mr. Bryan's , financial f"iew8, which all admit can ot be put in effect for his 3rm of office, if he is elected. R. I A II I G II-T O N E 1) CAMs PAIGxV. Happening in a town the other day where one of the prominent candidates spoke on the issues of the day, we were" struck with the large number of ladies in the audi ence, which means of course that the speech, was free from coarseness, bitterness abuse or profanity.. Looking back over a decade of years how different was the candition ofthings. Then the ribald ioke, the irreverent handling oj the scriptures, theillustra tion punctured with profani-' were me popular luiur. Now the most popular epeaK- is the most refined and careful in the selection of his language. This is a change that good men everywhere hail .with joj and we .hope tlie highi lane upon which the campaign has been placed by th - particular speaker .. pjay ue me Keyiiuteui iuuse wuicu are to come hereafter. Our political leaders ought to set the example of purity m their speeches, instead of doing the n order to please the rude and vicious ele- ments. Charity and ChiU dren. i Every person must have ob served the fact above stated. This is of incalculable benefit to the country. It proves most Conclusively " that the Democratic party, as we have frequently pointed out; but which cannot be, pre . , . . i . seuted too ofen, is the party nf mnrnlitv and of enlichten - ment. mis is Droven dv me , mi ... From the' caudidate for the highest State office to the candidate for the lowest, every mau a Christian gen- ' . . , tleman, lience our noble wo- manhood greet them with ... . . . their presence ana tneir ap- pr0Val. That noble, Chris- tian man, Hdn. C. B. Aycock, Bets the pace and all gladly follow rot because Avcock iftad but because thev wish it so, and would rebel were it otherwise, i We rejoice that the Democratic candidates are. as we believe, like Chev alier Bayard, 44Knights with out fear and witnout re proacl;,, reflecting the honor. nobility and Christian virtue of our incomparably noble womanhood and of the best of our men. We are glad that the time has come when no" other kind of men will be called to leadership in the Democratic party x of North Carolina. We rejoice great which has risen to such j high degree in decency, hon or and morality. We would be ashamed to belong to uy ! other kind. ' We sincerely hope that the time is near at hand when all county offices, even the lowest, can have as candidates only such men mo rally as we have now upon our State ticket. It is so, largely, now and all we need to make it so completely is that every good man range himself in the party line and use his influence in the party to that end. To go out of the party is to destroy one's infill ence and to put it out of one's power, to help in this most im portant matter; We are glad i to be able to say that not one of our county candidates, or county canvassers, as far as we are informed, makes a speech to which the most re fined lady may not listen with the utmost propriety. What a blessed influence all our speakers are exercising in ele vating and purifying the po litical atmosphere! The Congregationalist says: "Within recent years some have advocated openly the theorv ex pressed in the words, 'My coun try, right or wrong, as though patriotism could justify evil doing. Bnt that is not patriotism, but only the semblance of it, which would do evil for the sake of sup posed national welfare." If the existence of the country is in dan get, theu it is right to say, ''Our country, right or wrong." But Lord Chatham showed the noblest patriotism when he sided with the American colonies against his country in our war for indepen dence. Western Recoder.
