Clergyman Experiments With a Par ishioner, in Presence of Newspaper Men. . Des Moines, Dec. 21. In an ante room of the county jail, the Rev. Thomas Cassady, pastor of St. Mark's P. E Church, gave a hypnotic demon Btration today the nrst or a course of treatments he has undertaken, to cure William Lavean, one of his par ishioners, of the drink habit, by hpy notism. The minister put his parish oner to sleep, then called in newspa per men who were permittd to see the extraordinary efforts of the pas tor to create in Lavean 's mind a dis taste for intoxicating liquors. At the command of the minister Lavean opened his eyes. Cassady jabbed a pin into thclaack of his hand and struck the pin with his fist Blood spurteth. but Lavean nev er moved. - He was given similar tests to show that he was insensible to the orld. As the supreme test the pastor decreased bis pulse from 98 to 78. The flush had-gone from the pa tient's face and the twitching o muscles of the hand was no longer evident "I want you to quit drinking," said the clergyman "I want you to stay away from saloons. God loves you and God don't like to see you in such places. He wants you to be a better man.' You are here because it is to be a hospital. You, are here for treatment. "You musnt drink when you are released. By Christmas Day, I think, you can go out and go home, and s you'll find a big Christmas dinner awaiting you. And then you're go ing to turn over a hew leaf and be a better man and lead a better life." Lavean nodded yes and was restor ed to consciousness. He said he felt better and yawned lazily. The pas tor left, him, promising to give him daily treatments until Christmas eve, when hew, will be released, forever cured of his fondness for drink, the minisfr said. 40 PLAYED DEAD TO GET MONEY. Bud Graham's Wadesboro Friejids Send Mpney For Burial Expenses, But Bud is not Dead. Wadesboro Dec 21. The last few days have been days of con siderable anxiety among the col ored population of Wadesboro. One day laak week a "telegram was received here from Greens boro announcing . the death of a young negro,, well known in the town, Bud Graham. The mes sage requested that money be sent for the purpose of prepar ing the body for shipment here for burial. The friends ol the supposedly dead man immedi ately $ent the money and the train:were watched expected ly for the body. As the days pass ed the body did not come, in quiries were made and yesterday a message.-was received that Graham was alive and well. The near, approach o' the hoi iday season, was in all probabil ity, the cause of Bud's need of money, and his successful effort" at raising; the cash from his Wadesboro friends. It will prob ably be best, lor hfmhe remaine away from this town for awhile and allow the matter to "blow Building of the Holston River ail- road to be Completed at Once Will Give Southern a More Direct Route to the Virginia, Coal Fields. Pushing the Completion of the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio. Bristol, Tenn., Dec. 22. The Holston River Railroad, work on wmcn was suspended witn 1 the dawn of the panic fifteen months ago, is to be completed at once. The engineers in charge of the re-survey will soon have completed their work, and as soon as . their estimates are made up, the work will be let to contract. It is hoped to have this road ready for traffic about July 1st, 1909. When this road is completed the Southern Rail way, of which it is a branch, will nave a more direct route and a better grade to the Virginia coal fields. It is probable that the con tract will be awarded to either the S. Walton Construction Company, or to A. H. Jacoby. Both parties have a large amount of machinery near Moc casin Gap, the northern termi nus of the road, and would therefore be in a position to take the work several thousand dollars cheaper than any other contractors that might bid on it. The grading has been almost 80 per cent completed, and it is calculated that it could now be finished within two or three months by the use of a large force of men., Work on the Carolina, Clinch field & Ohio Railway is still being pushed, and it is under time purpose of the extend it both northward and southward, com pleting it as far as the Ohio river on the one end and Charles ton on the other within the next two -years. It is expected to deliver the .first shipment of coal from the Virginia mines over this road at Charlotte early in the year. The only thing that 13 causing delay is one or two incompleted bridges at Kings- port, Tenn. Now Time for You to lect Your Xmas Se- Goods Tables We will put aside any goods selected.
