She Reifuses to Lay Without the Stimulation of Xieofine Youngston, O., Jan. 31. Th,e saltiest old saltthat sails the sea does not love a chew of tobacco better than does a hen owned by Burt Miller, a " lawyer, of this city. For .more than a year the hen, which was always industrious and remunerative, has refused to lay her customary egg each day, unless her system is toned by tobacco. So each day Mr. Miller sets before her a can of chewing tobacco and she takes a chew. The word "chew" is figurative for, of course noth ing is rarer than hen's teeth. This hen pecks at the tobacco in te can, plainly with gret enjoy ment, and, after holding it In her mouth awhile, t jects it. The love of tobacco must be an acquired taste for a hen, just as are caviar and oiives for a man. Mr. Miller thinks his hen aexuired the taste by eating tobaccs quids which she found on the grounds af ter: his man-of-all-work had no further use for thorn. The hen will chew only the best line-cut of one particurar brand. She has refused to taste samplps of other brands sent to her by their manu facturers, who may have had in mind thevalne of an advertise ment reading. ''Even hens are nothappy until they get our "baccy." Mr. Miller tried to cure his hen of the habit by giving iier a "to bacco cure." It had no effect on her, however it may hare on humans. lnis hen's eggs have not the slightest taste or odor oF nico tine, but are "serictly fresh."
