The December Bulletin of the State Board of Health contains the oaoer which Dr. H. F. Longprepar ed and had read at the late Health Conference at Winston. The pafer is a, historv of the smallpox out break in this county and occupies of the 15 naires of the Bulletin. It is a very interesting and valuabl paper, and we regret that we cannot nublish it all In prefacing the article in the Bulletin the members of the State Board of Health sav: "At our request Dr. Long pre pared: the appended paper for the Health Conference at AVinston Salem. The request was made be cause. Dr. Long, as Superintendent of Health in his county, had manag ed the largest outbreak we have had in the State in recent years so w,.U that we believed his account, of hi." methods would be of value generally but especially to other health oni eers, who may at any time be con fronted with the same problem, of ten a very cutncult one vvnere ignore ance and prejudice and parsimony exist together. Wecomtnend the pa per heartily, and hope every one of our medical read ers in this State where the condi tions are the same will read it. They may have. use for its suggestions very soon, as smallpox is still in the country. Dr. Long concludes his paper with , the following recom-j mendatioris as to legislation: Iu conclusion I would like to say to the State Board of Health, if I can do so without the appearance of offering them unsolicited and unne cesary, advice particularly in regard to the infectious and contagious dis eases. The County Suprintendent sliuld be given the power to estab lish a hospital for infectious diseases whenever he thinks it necessary, in stead of waiting for county and city authorities to act, as the law is at present More than this, a com- oulsorv vaccination law should be passed, requiring the vaccination of services.! The deceased was of that sturdy Dutch stock, of whom there are lite a number in Western Iredell, and in frugality, industry and hon estyhe was a worthy representative of his race. He was a kind, obiig- in- neighbor, a true friend and a devoted member of the Lutheran Church. He was the oldest man in his township,' had been a church member for nearly 70 years and had never failed in his duty to church and State. A kind, good old man has gone to his reward. Wash Nantz, the negro who is charged, with burniug Capt. J. A. Harris' baru in Coddle Creek township-some weeks ago and who was taken from officers by armed men when he was arrested a few days later, was in town last Thursday for the purpose of instituting a dam age suit against certain citizens of south Iredell. He alleges that after his arrest on the charge of burning the barn a disguised mob took him from the officers in the night time, and dragged him to the woods, where he wa-: strung no by the neck and other v ise maltreated in the "hope of extort ng a confession from him. Faillrg in this he was turned loose. VVnile here he cansulted L. C. Csidwell, Esq., who has his case un- fiv advisement. No suit for dam ages has yet been instituted, but we understand one will be if the neces sary evidence can be procured. The re-appiar 4nce of -Nantz and this talk of auamage suit has arous ed additional feeling against the neirro amous: the good citizens of valuable" south Iredell. We understand that the circumstantial evidence against him is very strong, and most people in south Iredell, who are familiar with the facts, belive him the guilty man who fired Captain Harris' barn. A warrant for his arrest is in the hands of an officer and every effort will be made for nTs arrest and con viction. We are informed that Nantz is a very vicious negro, who has no reg ular abode. He went to his moth er's, who lives on Captain Harris' farm, about the middle of the sum mer and hung arouDd there all fall. His damage suit will, in our opinion, amount to nothing, and he will be lucky if he is not tried for arson at one of our terms of court in the near future. . ine Candie: h ine Fruits. & resh Christmas Cakes AXD DAINTIES OF EVERY DESCRIPTION.
