Cortical Strangers Now. Years of checkered life together, Days of fair and stormy weather, Hours of toil and weary pain, Moments of eternal gain All are gone we know not how, And have left us strangers now I Wosds that flow to lighten care, Thoughts which others could not share, Hopes too bright for mortal eyes, Pjrayers for wisdom from the skies All have ceased wo know not how. And have left us strangers now I Will it evermore be thus f Shall the past be lost to us 1 Can the souls, united here,. Never once again be hoar ? Must we to the sentence bow "Strangers ever, strangers now f" Thorns amid the roses press ; Earth is but a wilderness Flitting o'er a fallen race. Love can find no resting place ; Where his flowers immortal grow, Shall we strangers be as now ? Rough Story. During the time of a freshet, on the Wabash, where the flat country on both aides of the river was iiiunda ted by the rising water, it became ne cessary for those in the way to "es cape to the mountain" the Aiounds that were probabljf madc by the In-, dians for that pur(Ose. A party of fugitives on their way to safety, ov ertook a man in -a covered wagon with a span of horses, standing still in the road, the water nearly up to the hubs of his wheels and fast rising. He was sitting with a small book in one hand and a whip in the other, reading a line aloud and then laying on the whip. They stopped a mo ment to listen, attracted by the man's curious conduct, and were surprised to hear him read : "The wicked shall -bo turned into hell!" (Cut) giving a frightful emphasis to the word; "whoso believeth not shall be damn ed!11 -(cut) "how can ye escape tho damnation! of hell.'11 (cutV and many more words of like charac ter, yelling the emphasized words at the top of his lungs- Wondering at his conduct, the natives asked what it meant. "Why," said he, "I am a Metho dist minister, and am restrained from swearing ; but these horses were bought in a region where they were accustomed to hear such language, and I am endeavoring to come as near it as possible, conscientiously, in order to induce them to move, but I'm" Here he consulted bis book-leaving his hearers to imagine what he sought to give emphasis to his hopelessness of making them stir a peg. During the attack on Fort Dooel son, a Southern Hardshell exorter was holding forth in exalted strains declaring repeatedly that the Lord fought on the side of the south, and Jehovah was encamped round about the Coniederare army, saying that i was Impossible for the invaiding Yankee to conquer them. Just at the close of one of these sentences a man dashed up to tho church on horseback, and yelled out: "The Yankees have captured Fort Donelson and are comirrtr up the riv er 1" "Then, my brethren, save your selves, for the Lord has got licked 1" "Is my face dirty ?" asked a yottng lady from tho backwoods, while seat ed, with her'aunt. at the dinner table on a steamboat running from Cairo to Hew Orleans. "Dirty !" No. Why do you ask?" "Because that insult ing waiter insists upon putting a towel beside my plate. I've thrown three under tbe table and yet . every time he comes around he puts another one be fore me." A parson was picturing to an old sinner on his death-bed the glories that awaited him if he would repent. He promised him, among other things, that he should soon be an angel, "Don't talk that way, please, par son," said the dying man ; "if there is anyibing I have a horror of it is of being an angel sitting on a damp cloud picking a harp by moonlight." "Trust to Providence) for help!" was the exclamation of a husband, on seeing his wife attempt to roll a barrel of flour upstairs. "Trust to Provi dence, eh?" was her retort ; "do you suppose that providence w ill come and assist me while the devil is standing looking on ?" An Irishman, on hearing of a friend having a stone coffin made for himseif, exclaimed, exclaimed, "By my sow and that's a good idea. Sure an' a stone coffin 'ud last a man a lifetime." "What have you done with your doll, Amy? J "LockM.it up, papa; going to keep t for my 'ttty gal r when I get bigjist like mamma." 6J "Ab, but suppose you have none ?" Nevermind; my g'an child will hill have it." A transcendental preacher took for his text' "Feed my lambs." A plain farmer very quaintly remarked to him, on coming out of the church' "A very good text, sir, but you should take care uot to put the hay so high in the rack that the lambs can't reach it." 8 ,6D gEABOARD RAILROAD.
