He had forged the name of Dr- A. E. Dick inson, Jus brother, Jeter and Dickinson and l'rof. Taylor of Wake Forest College, who is his brother-in-law. One gentleman, who lives in another t'ounly arid who had his suit removed tv our court, told us that the reason wc had so many foreign suits was be muse the litigants were all satisfied hat they would get justice in Warren ' unty. 1- Judge Gudger required Mr. Mc Craw, County treasurer, to give $8,000.00 :.ldJtiojjal security. His bond was I orleclly good, but one of his sureties i ived in Virginia, and the most of his I roperty was in that State. Roseola is prevailing to some extent. mat dreaded epidemic to I he feathered tribe "Chicken Cholera" has again made its appearance in this vicinity. Exceedingly-large quantities of fowls are dying both daily and nightly from the effects of the same. Wheat crops are improving very rapidly. 3 The. oat crops are also looking well for the season. , I learn that . Mr. H. B. Hunter, Jr. speaks of opening a dry goods and grocery stor', at Ridgeway. Guano Agents are very numerous around here. Miss Sade Lair is visiting relatives at Littleton. Mr. Win. Lair is making preparations for building him a nice dwelling. Yours &c. L. D. BROOKSTON ITEMS. March 1G, 1880. Edit or Warren News: Everything quiet. We are having more rain than we have had at any one time in several months, and the land i wetter and the roads are wetter and muddier than they have beenjSiace tbe winter set in, and the farmers have done less work for the last two weeks' than any other two during the winter; they have not been able to plow a furrow in about two weeks owing to the wet weather, and they begin to think they are getting behind "with" their plowing. Mns. (Yly Clark, near Old Shatter died at her residence last Sunday night, about 10 o clock, aged about seventy years. Her funeral was preached this afternoon, by the Baptist preacher Thos. We t'c.i.- this mortgage busi ness will ruin thi country, but when we try to think of a better plan we are at a loss. Mr. H. is a hard working man nd it is lard for such men to lose their la Kr in. that way. I We heard a crowd of colored men dis cussing the affaire pf the Country, a few days ago. They gky they are tired of the penitentiary and arle in favor of the old rule, when a man steals, take him ant strike him "nine and thirty," and let him work for his family instead of sending him to prison. State vs. Tom Drake, subornation of perjury. In this case the principal witness was Josephine Crossan. The prisoner was acquitted. - The judge took off two months from the six that Eliza Jones was sentenced to the County jail for. In Joe Ramsay's case, he had been al lowed to pay a fine of $25 and the costs. In default of payment, he was sentenced to be imprisoned in the County jail three months, and the Board of county Commis sioners were authorized to hire him out to aiiy public work in the State. In the suit of Mrs- Arlington against Jojhn C. Davis for damages onv account of alleged improper use of mill race, the jury found a verdict for defendant. The Judge instructed in this case that the burden of proof belonged to the plaintiff. The case ofPurnell ys. Vaughan, Barnes & Co. and the case of 'Hamlin vs. Tucker were both continued.
