We suppose that Doe tors study sawing( ?; as much, or, pro Ikbly more than they do. capsuling medicine or rolling pills, and besides this, learn a great deal that thev don't have to study for. Why is this done? The farmers are at the same old tricks againbury ing money that will nine times out of ten. never to be res- urected and some of them have al ready past the corner so far that their lipses will actually turn to either the left 'or right, whichever way a bag of fertiliz er, phosphate or guano should happen to be. Bishop Ly mail's Views on the Negro Exodus. ' Bishop Lyman, of N)rth Carolina, when in New York some days ago, gave an expression of his views as to the colored exodus from North Carolina. He asserted that the exo dus was not the result of hostility to the colored people on the pjart of the whites of that State, nor the poor crops. In his opinion, the railroads were responsible for it. -'They sent their agents out to work up the ex odus simply as a means of increasing their passenger traffic, and, accord ing to the Bishop, some of these agents have made a good thing, pe cuniarily, out of it. They were al lowed a commission of $1 for each person they persuaded to buy a tick et. With this inducement before them, they used every argument they could think of to increase the number of emigrants, ' and some of their statements were neither fair nor. truthfnl. They maligned he white people of the State, spoke dis paragingly of the lands, and drew a j highly-colored picture of the splendid way in which those who emigrated would fare in other States. The Bishop referred to the" indigna tion of the whites of a few of the towns, and said that - it was both natural and excusable, as the action of the agents was sure to bring great hardships upon many of the emi grants. ! I In his comments Bishop Lyman did riot hold '. Northern newspapers blameless in the matter. He stated (!'' :. that. they assisted the exodus by as sertions not more truthful than those of the railroad agents, and these as sertions, being laid before the colo red people, helped to cause dissatis faction. It is not to be supposed that the newspapers in question were greatly interested in the exodus it self. Their object was to make it an occasion for adding to their , stock of political capital. Bishop Lyman's testimony is very timely, and will help to overthrow the charges rgainst the white people of North Carolina. Not That Kind of a Mail .' '.
