A tele gram has just been received from Cheefoo China to the effect that Admiral Togo of the Japauese squadron has a special vessel and will make another attempt to bottle up Port Arthur tonight. If the ef fort proves successful the Japanese propose to attack the forts one by one and if such a thing is possible dismantle them. Special to the Gazette-Messenger. Boston, Mass., April 21. The Democratic S'ate Convention, which has promised to be most stormy, now bids fair to develop into a compara tively harmonious gathering. Tha program for today will include the resolution announcing that the De mocracy ot the State of Massachu setts declares tor the nomination u Hon. Richard Olney as a candidate for the office of -president of the United. States. Then will follow the election of the delegai.es and al ternates. , A resolution will be offered in structing the delegates to vote on all questions in national convention as a unit. It is not expected that the platform will be adopted. Boston, Mass. April 21. (Later) The delegates are slow in gathering and it was eleven o'clock before the convention was called to order. After the usual routiue business John J. Flaherty was made per manent chairman. He was con ducted to the platform and addressed the convention. His speech was re ceived with rousing enthusiasm. It has been known for sometime that John D. .Rockefeller and his associates for sometime have been prosecuting a systematic effort to control the railway, coal, steel and iron business of the United States. The Frank furter Zetung today prints a dis- ! patch from from its correspondent at Manchuria which says that there is a bitter Anti-American feeling prevalent throughout that section ! ol the Chinese domain. This feel i inar, says the correspondent is so strong that the lives of the Amer icans are endangered. The Rus sians are persecuting the Americans and they 3re now detained at Muk den on the charge of espoinage in behalf ot the Japanese. An Ameri ran named Ileilly, of New York City, has disappeared from Mukden and his fate is now unknown. The Rus sian authorities at Mukden have ordered the arrest of a Canadian named Davidson on the charge of espionage but he could not be found. Ti.ere is a similar Seeling preva lent against the Eoglish arrested at Port Arthur on the charge of being spies and they have been hanged at Mukden.
