Mr. EditoPw We are confi dent that the flag taken by the 5th JSew Hampshire and now being discussed by the S ate papers is the flag of Company E, Southern Guards, 4 h, N. C., Regt., State Troops. We were ordered to divest ourselves of all baggage before going into the fight at "South Mountain", two days before the battle of Sharpsburg. I entered the 4th at its organization in 18GI, and I was with the 4ih Regiment as late as August 1864, and can say 1 never heard of a battle flag belonging to the gallant Old Fourth being captured or lost by the Regiment, to that date. Many graduates leave college with their minds filfed with a mass of useless things, many of which they have to unlearn before they lead successful lives There are too few school advantages given North Carolina's chil dren but when better methods of teaching are devised--when more common sense is taught tie children---the c o m m on sense of thd tax payer will make him willing to pa more tax for schools.
