A S. KELLY & CO'S,
Mr. Editor: Since reading
in your paper concerning the
flag o; 4th N. C. Regiment 1
have concluded to give ray
version and correct some mis
takes. Thelth took positicn in
Washed out road or bloody lane,
about 7 or 8 o'clock in the
morning of 17th of Sept. Capt.
Thos Marsh, of Co. I. was shot
in about an hour from the time
we got there. Soon after that
an order came from our right
repeatedly to pass it down the
line, the enemy are about to
flank us on the right, I passed
the order myself several times.
I have always thought that
Gea. Feitherston was sent to
fill up tee gap on our right, but
faded to go far enough, and
came up in our rear, mistook us
for the enemy and fired into
our line. Lieut. Weaver of Co.
H. arose took the flag and
waved it to let them know that
we were friends and he was
shot down in the acip Should
not his name ba placed on the
i oil of honor? For to stand up
individually at that time was
almost certain death, but he
did it- to save his men.
Lieut. Cotton took command
and in a few moments Feather
ston's men were in the road
with us. I was wounded and
one of his man fell dead across
me.
I think that Featheiston
learned that he was not far
enough to the right and gave
orders to his men to fall back,
which order was taken by our
men as well as his, and the
road was evacuated by all ex
cept the dead and wounded.
In a very short time Gen.
Maghr's Irish Brigade from
New York, advanced across
this bloody lane- I was taken
by one them and carried to
hospital.
Our flag could not have been
captured except it had been
left by color guard in ths lane,
and if it had been left there
Gen. hlaghrs men would hav.
captured it. But Lieut. Ed
Tripp says he was among the
last to leave the lane and
formed the regiment in the
rear with the flag.

A Drummer's Trick on Bryan.
Wiilhms Jennings Bryan
arrived here yesterday from his
extensive tour of Mexico, and j
left last night from Austin. It
was announced that Bryan
would arrive here Thursday,
and at all the towns along the
line of railroad between here
and Eagle Pass demonstrations
were given by crowds, An
amusing imposition was piac
tictd on these crow 's at several
stations by Henry Long, a com
mercial traveler of St. Louis,
who has a resemblance to
Bryan. Long was in the Pull
man car of the train on which
Bryan was expected and when
the crowd at the small towns
caughth sight of him they
cheered him vociferously, and
called for a speech.
Long thought it an oppor
tunity for a joke, and he walked
out on the platform, and was
introduced to the crowds by
the conductor of the train as
Mr. Bryan. Long then startled
the audience by making a
strong s'ound money speech,
saying his, views on coinage had
been completely changed by
his visit to Mexico, and that
he had reached the conclusion
that William McKinley was
one of the best Presidents that
this country ever had.
The speech was repeated a1
several places, and was not
greeted with great applause,
except by the sound money
men in the crowds, who were
highly elated over the sup
posed change in the views of
the former great free si'ver
champion. They did not learn
until toaav that an imposition
had been practiced upon them,
and their wrath was great
