The regular monthly meeting of the Volunteer Fire Company will take place at the City Hall this evening at 8 o'clock. By order b . W. Hoyt, Capt. ; R. R. Handy, Sec. Quite a number of visitors were here last evening to attend the masked bail and german. Full account of which will ap pear in tomorrow's issue as we were unable to have it r ady for our compositors in time today. Rev. Dr. .Payne, the beloved and popular pastor of the Pres byterian church, this city, while out attending to his carriage horse yesterday morning1, acci dentally slipped and fell to the ground. While the fall was not serious, still quite painful. The doctor's many friends all over the city, join us in wishing for him speedy recovery to health. Fortunate indeed were those who heard Gilbert Walden at the City Hall last night. The entertainment consisted of re citals, readings and songs, with music on the flute and guitar. Mr. Walden is an elocutionist of the first water. As a delineator of the negro dialect we have not heard him surpassed. Wre hope to have the pleasure of hearing this gifted Virginian again at an early day. Mr. W. H. Edwards, of this city, formerly of Gates county, and who is now engaged in the mercantile business here, we un derstand is about to take charge of the Washington Planing Mills and will begin at once to operate the mill. Mr. Edwards is a practical mill man, having been in the business for a number of years, and has most excellent New York, Boston and Philadel phia connections. We see no reason why Mr. Edwards should not meet with success in his un dertaking. Our best wishes. The reopening of the mill wilt be quite a step forward for Washington and it behooves all our mill men to assist him in every way. Col. E. A. Osborne, of Char lotte, the last commander of the Fourth regiment, North Carolina State troops, has written to Ad jutant General Ay ling, of New Hampshire, for the captuied flag of that regiment, which Mrs. Persis F. Chase has placed in General Ayling's hands. Col. Osborne says he desires the flag as an . interesting relic for the pleasure and satisfaction of the survivors of that once splendid regiment. General Ayliug says that Mrs. Chase has left the matter of the return entirely in his hands and that he will be happy to return the flag upon an authorization ' by the adjutant general of North Carolina that Osborne may receive it. This authorization was given Monday. NO, WE'RE NIT VERY WAR&L.
