is an entire absence of war news
up to noon. If the navy depart
ment knows the whereabouts
of the Spanish fleet, the infor
mation is carefully concealed
fro ai the public. The same may
be said of Sampson's fleet.
Gladstone no Better.

bnlletin issued at 1 d. m. says
the temporary improvement in
Gladstone's condition did not
continue, and his state of utter
prostration has returned.

Fire in Battleboro Mass.

Battleboro, Mass-, May 18.
Fire this morning destroyed the
business section of the town.
Fourteen factories, occupied
chiefly by jewelry manufac
tures, and a dozen dwelling
houses and storehouses were
burnnd. The loss is estimated
at $1,000,000, with partial in
surance. Five thousand per
sons are thrown out of employ
men. Battleship Alabama Launched.

battleship Alabama was
launched at the Cramp ship
yard today. As the vessel gli
ded gracefully into the waters
the traditional bottle of wine
was broken over her bow by
Miss Mary A. Morgan, daugh
ter cf Senator Morgan, of Ala.
Only a small crowd
was present, as the government
desires to keep su:h informa
tion secret as might be gathered
by strangeis in Cramp's yards
where other ships are beino
built. Work will be rushed on
the Alabama, and she will b ; a
powerful fighter.

War Department has granted
leave of absence to First Lieut.
David C. Shanks of the -18th In
fantry, to enable him to accept
the commissionjas Major of the
Second Virginia Volunteers.
Also granted leave to First
Lieut. David Price of the First
Artillery to become Major of
the Third Virginia Volunteers.
Bryan Raising a Regiment.

Lincoln, Neb , May 18. Hon.
William J. Bryan today began
active work as recruiting officer,
raising a regiment under the au
thority of the Governor. Bryan
desires to go to the front and be
in active service.
Cyclone in Nebraska.

Albion, Neb., May 18. A cy
cloue passed over this section
yesterday and did much damage
to the, crops and property, blow
ing down houses, trees, etc. No
loss of life reported, though
many injured. The principal
damage was done at BWoodriver,
Bladen, Franklin and River
town, but the telegraph wires
are down and details are at this
time unobtainable.
Alger's Daughter Married.

Auva Alger, daughter of the
Secretary of War, was married
at noon today to Mr. Chas Rus
sell Pike The President and
Mrs. McKinley, Vice-Prisident
and Mrs. Hobart, and all the
members of the Cabinet and
their wives, including two hun
dred guests, were present.
Cannonading Off the Tortngas.

The Commandant of the island
of Tortugas reports hearing
heavy cannonading to the east
ward of the island on Sunday.
A heavy fog prevented the sight
ing, or locating of anything
from which the firing could
have come.
