The captured Spanish gun
boats, Alvarado and Sandoval,
are at Norlolk, Va., from Guan
tanamo, Cuba, under the com
mand of Lieutenants Blmc and
Anderson, the North Carolina
naval heroes. They will be re
paired and refitted at the Nor
folk nayy yard.

Carolina Regiment at Hayana

Senator Justice S. Morrill, of
Vermont, died on Tuesday in
Washington of pneumonia.. He
was born in 1810 and was in
his 89th year. He was exceed
ipgly well preserved, and up to
his last sickness was expect
ant of many years additional
of life. He has served thirty
two years as senator. Whether
that is the longest of all terms
we are unable to say, but sup
pose it is. He had four more
years to serve of his sixth
term of si yearg. He said re
cently he expected to serve it
out, and be a candidate for re
election to a sereii th term.

If the dispatches from Wash

torney Bernard is about to
lose his official head. For two
or three days Mr. Bernard has
been in Washington trying to
explain the charges brought
against him by an expert in tne
Department of Justice, but
from what can be learned he
has failed, and his removal
from office will be no surprise
to those who are acquainted
with the facts. From the De
partment it is learned no com
munications is held with him
except in writing, and that he
is bad repute with the Administration.

On last Friday a telegrani
was received here announcing
the death of Mr. Geo. W.
Kugler, senior member of the
firm of G. W. Kugler & Sons,
lumber manufacturers here and
in Philadelphia, which gad
event took place at Mantua,
N. J. Mr. Kugler'a health had
been failing for some time and
during the past summer he
went to Mantua with the
hope of recovery. He leaves a
wife and seven children. Mr.
Kugler came here about 15
years ago and engaged in the
lumber business which was
successful and at the time of
hie death was preparing to en
gage in the lumber interest on
a more extensive scale. The
Gazette- Messenger extend s
sympathy to the bereaved ones.
The County Board of Educa
tion and Board ot County Com
missioners are in session today.
Mr. E well Roper has, accept
ed a position with Mr.! E. W.
Avers as salesman. He is a
bright young man and has our
best wishes.

which has been such a grand

Washington Thursday and Fri
day nights next week under the
auspices of the ladies of the
Episcopal church. The cast
will be made up of our best lo
cal talent who will be coached
by Messrs Bertram and Will-
ard the authors of the play,
they will also appear in two of
the leading pans. The gen
tlemen are now in town and
rehearsals are progressing.
"Captain Dick" has met with
tremendous success in Raleigh,
Oxford, Henderson, Goldsboro,
New Berne. Kinston. Greenville
and Elizabeth City. Return
dates have been' made in every
one of these towns.
