ven W Meencfei4 J. A. AUTUUK,:Jr., Editor. PUBLISHED EVERT DAY EXCEP SUNDAY. A STRANGE SCENE. The people of this country they that thought of it had a strange spectacle presented tc thTjir view on Washington's birthday, and one that ought tc Cue the lovers of liberty and fair dealing to stop and consider and ask themselves the ques tion, what does all this mean': Whe n will this farce end? While the people of the country were celebrating the natal day of th Father of his country, his coun try's forces were engaged in per forating the bodies of the Filipi nos with bullets, and asking themselves the question: What business have these insurgents with freedom? They are in the way of the army that is carrying this great land of liberty to its destiny, and they should be shot to death by thousands if they do not get out of the way. Now wo say this is a strange thing to be enacted on the natal day of the Father of his country, by his countrymen. Had any one dared to predict such an event words would be inadequate to express the wave of indignation of the people. Yet it is true in even particular- The Filipinos are only fighting for that boon thai Washington fought for seven long years, and the cause foi whH'h they are bleeding and dy ing Is as dear to their hearts as a-ny noble impulse that tired th American heart in the Revolu tionary period. The Vu : States did not send D;nv- y to Manilla to conquer these people but the Spaniards,- and we haa no doubt in our mind bat what they aided the United Siute m o::peiiiug the Spanish, belk-vinjL: tietr independence would slu; be assured. But be this as it may, the world is treated today to the strange spectacle of a war that commenced to free Cuba, waged in the Philippines to bring its people into subjection, and while in this land we were fceiebrating the day our hero. Washington, was born, in the far away islands of the sea our army was engaged in slaughter ing a people who have been lighting for years to be free. Is it not strange? Itill OLD CLUE BALK. REED AND THE DEMOCRATS. There was one occurence in fie closing scenes of Congress that will make the occasion his torical, and emphasize the fact that the hero of today may to morrow be repudiated and the dispised one of the present may be U13 popular hero of tomorrow and was the passage of a reso lution introduced by the Dem ocratic leader, Mr. Bailey en dorsmg the course pursued 1 y Speaker Reed and thanking him tor the impartial manner in which he had presided over the deliberations of the House. It we remember correctly, and we . think we do, it was only it few years ago we were all denouuc-1 ing Speaker Reed for counting ; a quorum, and calling htm Czar ! and other harsh names. Nor is this all. Some of the Democratic Representatives wanted to cui his throat as he sat in the pre siding officer's chair. Last Sat urday, upon the eve of the ad journment of the House, Mr. Bailey, the Democratic leader, arose and af.er an eloquent speech inyhich he did not for get to eulogize the Speaker pre sented the resolutions of which we speak, and every mother's son of them, including old Joe Wheeler, of whom the dispatch es the day before representee him being snubbed by Reed, hopped on their feet and put tin resolution through with a rush While there is nothing wroni, in the voting of this vote o. thanks, aod the memoers had a perfect right to thus corn p 11 i.e i Mr. Reed, we can not refrah from remarking, we were Iiai- baek yonder about ten years ag when we denounced the Speak er and called him a Czar and aia i hat, or else we were liars la; Saturday, for as the Ethiopia! hits not changed li is skiu, or tin Leopard his snots, so is Mr. Reed the same kind of a man and Speaker then that he is now. Verily, how we .change.
