WASHINGTON PROGRESS. 1 IL I I I J 1 -X J.... 1 ! -.! I LJMET PUBLISHED BY THB POaRESS PUBLISHING COMPANY. TUESDAY, JULY 26, 1SS7. Editors Progress: The Progress has begun a good work, in endeavoring to arouse the attention of the people of Wash ington to the state of isolation in which they are likely to bp left by the various railroads that are plan ned, and in the way of being built, around their Town. It is to be hoped that the seed will not fall on barren ground, and perish from the unfitness of the soil to sprout it. Some years ago, the writer of this, foresaw the danger which is now growing nigh, and cried the alrm as loud as he could; but with no effect. It is not yet too late, but if too much time be taken in de liberation, or rather in tailing to consider at all, the delay will cer tainly make the only proper and feasible mode of relief more diffi cult and expensive. I differ some what from the Progress as to what connection by railroad with the rest of the world the Town ieeds. Some of. the projects sug gested will be absolutely injurious, as will be shown. There is of course but one that is best, and I will endeavor to indicate that by indications that must be convincing. A Railroad to a Town can only be useful by bringing persons or freight to the Town, or by taking them from the Town to some other place to which they wish to go, or as is usually the case, by doing both. In the Eastern part of the XJnited States, the great line of transportation must always be from South to North and vice versa ! cross the lines of latitude; from one climate to another. Secondary to this, and to some extent subsida ry to it is a line Hast and West, by which the products of the hills and ercd lor the present purpose, as being Norfolk itself. This is the shortest economical line that can ever be built, from the section of country which for the sake of brev ity, we have "called Wilmington, and the common objective point of railroads on or near the Atlantic In this day of tendency towards socialism and materialism it is well Frederick Krupp, the German inventor of the large guns which to look carefully to the foundation ' go by his name, died on the 14th, principles on which we act. Take a map and and apply to it your square and measure, and you will find that the shortest practicable line from a large part of the Southern Atlan tic sea board say, from Wilming ton and its neighborhood, to Nor folk, runs through this our Town of Washington. There was a time, before the day of railroads, when this was the stage route, and the usual route for travellers, and it will still continue to be the usu al and natural path for all sorts of transportation, when it duly avails itself of its natural advantages. I take Wilmington and its neighbor hood including Charleston as representing in a general sense the seabord South of us, and although, New York may in the same gener al way be considered the ultimate terminus of transportation from tfie South, yet as Norfolk stands directly in the way, for practical purposes, it must be considered as the objective point of all Southern and Eastern travel and transporta tion by land. The building of the Wilmington and Weldqn Railroad took from us all travel from Wilmington, and the road from New Berne to Golds boro, all travel from the country represented by New Berne. The railroad routes, though longer, were shorter in time, more coinfor 'fable and cheaper. The road which I suggest as the primary necessity to restore to this Town its natural advantages of position, will begin at Wilming ton, or at some point on the North Bast branch of the Cape Fear near that city; it will run through Ons low and other counties and cross the railroad from New Berne to Goldsboro just far enough west of STew Berne to strike and cross Neuse River at some point where it is not too wide to be convenient ly bridged thence it will cross Pam lico River a little above this town; thence it will run so as to strike Long Acre Ridge on which it will run to Macky's Ferry. As this Ferry is the nearest point on the South side of Albemarle Sound to Eden ton from which a Railroad now runs to Norfolk, it may be consid- The Woman who Laughs For a ood every dav household angel give us the woman who 1 1 -r -r . . laugns. tier biscuits may not al ways be just right, and she may oc casionally burn her bread and for get to replace dislocated buttons, but for solid comfort all dav and and every day she is a very para gon. All the while that protectionists are talking about the gain that American work ingmen receive from the tariff, they fail to recall the fact that we have absolute free trade in labor. This we think, is not a good reason why immigration should be restricted and, indeed, if natural causes alone were iu operation, we might not worry about the matter. But there are two factors in the case that de serve careful consideration. One is the tendency of foreign govern ments to send their paupers to this side of the water and the other is the iniquitous system of steam ship agents who, by delusive promises, induce thousands of per sons to sacrifice all that they have in the world for barely sufficient to get to America with, The conse quence is that thousands of people come to our shore utterly unprepar ed to secure a living here and soon become either paupers or anar-Aists.- Shelby New Era. the fourwindsof Heaven.
