WARREN THIS For the benefit of those who now htve their numbers and know about tho order in which they are likely to be called for examination under the Selective Draft Law it may be stated that the next official move to be made; according to the regulations, is: The determination by the Governor of the quotas to be called and fur nished by the several local boards. In Warren County this number is 1S2. This will determine how many men from your district must go into thu service. The possibility of exemp tions will necessitate the examination of two or three times as many men as are needed. The War Department's bulletin for the information of registrants reads in part: As soon as quotas are assigned to each State and each board, each board will call up n persons whose sards are in its jurisdiction instructing them to present themselves for examination. This call will be posted at the office nf hfi-lnr.l board and the Daners wiU be requested to print it. A notice will also be mailed to you, but the posting of the list at the office of the board will be deemed sufficient notice to charge you with the duty of present ing yourself. The law therefore makes it your duty to inform yourself when you are called. The mailing is for your con venience, but if the letter never reach es you, yon cannot make that an ex cuse. Watch the lists at the office of your board and see when you are called for examination. You must report for physical exam ination on the day named in your call. (a) If you are found physically dis qualified the board will give you a certificate which" will explain to yoti what your further duties are, (b) If you are found physically qualified and file a claim for exemp tion within seven days after "your call you will be-given ten days after filing your claim of exemption to file proof in support of your claim of exemption. (c) If you are found physically qualified and file no claim for exemp tion, or if you do not appear for phy sical examination, your name will be posted to the district board as one who was called for military service and was not exemptied or discharged. On the eighth day after call, or with in two days thereafter, copies of the list of persons so posted to the dis trict boards will-be given to the press with a request for publication, will be posted in a place at the office of the local board accessible to the public view, and notice will be mailed to you at the address on your registration card. Therefore watch the notices posted in the office of the board about ten days after the day you were called and make arrangements for the prompt receipt of mail. The above instruction from the War Department therefore PUT IT UP TO YOU. 1 258 Geo. Burchett, W. Plains. 2 458 Edward Davis, W. Plains. 3 1436 Wm. D. Thornton,Littleton. .4 854 Geo. Miss Blanche Hicks, of Littletdn, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Hicks. Miss Mattie Hicks is at Johnston- Willis hospital for treatment.. . We trust that she may come home much improved in health. We are glad to report that the con dition of Mr. C. C. Perkinson and his daughter is so much improved that the nurse who has been in charge re turned to Richmond last Tuesday. The farmers are depressed over so much rain. A protracted meeting will com mence at Sharon Church next Sun day night at 8:15 p. m. Mr. Johnson will be assisted during the services by the Rev. Mr. Trueblood, of Roanoke Rapids. Since so many of our Warren Coun ty boys have been called to serve their country, the war seems a reality indeed, and a very serious reality too. There are many women in this com munity who are also endeavoring to serve their country in a quiet and un demonstrative way by the conserva tion of the food supply. Some who have never before taken any partic ular interest in canning and preserv ing are trying to see how much they can save for future use. Do not let your garden grow up to weeds now Keep on planting and keep on can ning. If you do not feel able to buy all the cans you can fill, there are other ways of taking care- of your sur plus. You can put vegetables up in brine, and you can dry or evaporate your fruit. In the July number of tho 1 adies Home Journal directions are given for putting up food in brinfc by a new method recently discovered by the government chemist and ex perts. Our county demonstrator can also show you how to brine or evapo rate your produce. Many , of our people are attending the meeting at Zion Church this week. Doubteless passers-by have noticed the attractive flower garden in front of the church. The credit should be given to Miss Mary Perkinson who has spared no pains to make the flowers grow. NOTICE. FARMWIVES During the rush fruit season, when the busy farmwife apparently has on hand more fruit than tfte possibly can- take care of, when she already is so dead tired that she almost rebels at the thought of more work, and with a hundred-and-one other things cal. ing for immediate attention lest some thing go to waste, she can greatly lighten her burden by bottling practi cally all the fruit juices at various times during the winter. In this way all the empty bottles may be utilized and the purchase of sugar, which is no small item at this time, is distri buted throughout the year. The fam ily thus may enjoy fresh jellies, which many claim is better than that which has been made a number of months, different kinds of jelly may be made by-combining juices which will not jell with others, and fruits ripening at dif ferent seasons may also be combined. Thus the juice of peaches, cherries, pineapples and strawberries may be kept without sugar and later made into delicious jelly by combining them with apples. By experiment the Bureau of Chem istry, United States Department of Agriculture, has proven that jellies made from unsugared sterlized juices of apples, grapes, currants and crab apples which have been kept from nine to eighteen months were of the best color, flavor and texture. To nut up unsugared fruit juices for jelly making, proceed exactly as if jelly were to be made at the time. Cook the fruits until they are soft and strain out the juice through a flannel bag. Heat and pour while hot into bottles previously scalded. Fill the bottles full, leaving noair space be tween juice and cork or seal. Place the filled sealed bottles on their sides in water near the boiling point, and keep them in the bath about thirty minutes. Make sure the corked or sealed end Js under the hot water. As soon as the bottles are cool, cover the cork with a paravn seal. Thoro ster ilization and sealing are absolutely essential to success. To make jelly from the sterilized juice, test its jelling quality, add the proper amomnting of sugar, and pro ceed as in making jelly from freshly pressed juice. Farming Business.
