N. C as second-class matter nder Act of Congress. March 3. 1879 THE HOPE OF THE FARMER An All-wise Providence has shortened the harvest for the year 1921. "Paul may plant and Apollos ' water, but God alone giveth the increase. There is no intelligent farm er who does not know that a normal harvest of cotton and to bacco in the South would have meant-disaster under the pre vailing plans of those who make and administer government. The selfish purpose of those who played politics with govern ment and refused to ratify and confirm the will of those of large vision and bring about prosperity in the World; the purpose of those who curtail ed the volume of money have gone to naught in-so-far as the produced is concerned, because God has moved in mysterious ways His wonders to perform, and the rain ceased to fall, and vegetation waned and the fruits came not, and man found himself with half the usual pro duction of market crops. The Result With this half crop those who cry "supply and demand" must take "their own medicine and the farmer profits thereby. The half crop of cotton will bring him three or four times the debt paying power of the full crop. Had the cotton crop, for inst ance, been a normal crop the South would not have gotten seven cents per pound, regard less of the fact that the World needs every pound of a full crop, including the surplus of last year. The Lesson Plant less acreage in cotton, make a small crop and net three or four times the profit you have formerly received from normal acreage. Then plant the re mainder of your acreage in food crops for your family and for Salisbury Post. In number of spindles active in July North Carolina was second only to one state, that of Massachusetts. Thus do we grow and as we grow pass other states, and it is only a question of a short time until North Carolina shall have put this one under her. Just another evidence that North Carolina is big and rich and coming rapidly to the front. Senator Overman, just re turning to Washington after several weeks spent at his home in this city, said in the capital yesterday that North Carolina would soon be one of? the three richest states in the country. We know that such will be the case and when that does come to pass may we also be the best state so far as character and genuine worth go. ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICE Having qualified as administrator upon the estate of John Wesley Pow ell, deceased, late of Warren county, this is to aiotify all persons having claims against said estate to present them properly verified to the under signed on or before the 30th day of September 1922 or this notice will be plead in bar of recovery. SANITARY BARBER SHOP Wairenton, N. C. Howard APPOINTMENT MR. KING your stock. This will spell pros- j perity for you, and will be only ust and good business. !c i The Clerk of the Superior Court, Mr. John D. Newell, who has the appointment to fill va cancies on the Board of Com missioners has chosen Mr. John ! Wesley King- to fill the unexpir ed term of the late Mr. James Burroughs. Mr. King is a larmer and bus iness man of Hawtree township who has been successful in his own affairs. He is broad-minded and progressive, yet he knows that the tax payers money should not be carelessly spent. His appointment is generally satisfactory, and we believe that Mr. King will make a safe, conservative Commissioner. HALF MILLION ON ROADS Our attention was called a few days ago to the fact that the County of Warren had ex pended over a half -million ! dol lars on its roads in the last ten or twelve years. With the exception of one or two sections of the county this money has been well worth while, and the results show in the general thrift and education and comfort of the people. In some sections this money was unfortunately allowed to be im properly expended in failing to get value received good roads ; but yet we doubt if these sec tions would be willing to go back to the old roads and old methods. 1 REGISTERED OPTOMETRIST, OF MONROE, N.
