pp PAGE 2 ~ EVEN! IN A LIBRARY Sometimes when I have read a sordid tale Of our own times; some story writ to show How vile is humankind, how lecherous, low, How worse than any vermin?past the pale Of help or hope ... all this in bleak detail, Page after page, I close the book the bock and go In thought over the names of men I know: ; , All kinds of men, both in and out of jail. No vermin these, not one of them, Instead. Struggling creatures like myself I find. Some are maimed, it may be; some are weak; Some dwarfed and twisted by the bitter wind Of adverse fate; but those of whom I've read I never find, no matter where I seek. ?JAMES NORMAN BELL Miss Lucy Perry Burt of Louis burg spent several days last week with Mrs. M. In a country as full of money > s ever, men are trading their work j or their belongings for other men's goods. Here are some items: In Chippewa, Mont., a farmer got five gallons of gasoline for two dozen eggs, five pounds of butter I fat, and ten bushels of wheat. At a shirt sleeve exchange In Oklahoma a tree surgeon reported that he was paid for five hours' work wuh ten cents in cash, a dinJ rutin* UTERES LUCY P. ter and a variety of clothing. , He turned in the clothing in reurn for things that he could use. The head of a stock exchange louse had a customer offer him liamonds in lieu of cash with which o reopen an account. In New England, school fees have ecently been paid in potatoes. Nineteen Edgecombe County tobacco growers will conduct field lemonstrations with E. Y. Floyd, obacco specialist at State College .uring the coming season. Billswiggle?I suppose in these imes you live in apprehensive tre>idation, don't you? Dinklesproof? No; I live in the uburbs. CARD OF THANKS To my friends and entire comnunity I wish to extend my sincere hanks for their great kindness and leroic work in trying to save my lome.
