( Thursday, Feb. 9: Office. 1 Friday, Feb. 10: Office Meat ranks high diet-wise and dollar-wise with moat peo- J pic. We are a nation of meat eaters. One fourth of the money households spends for food used at home goes for meat. ; In the U. S. during 1959, we ate an average of 147 pounds per person. This is about the same per capita consumption it was 50 years ago. In between times, though, we have gone from a low of 117 pounds in 1935 to a high peak of 167 pounds in 1956. Meat consumption increases with income. Greater purchasing power since the mid 1930's has helped to increase the consumption of meat. We are also eating more dairy and poultry products, while the consumption of potatoes?white and sweet ? and breads and cereals have declined. The greatest decrease in the amount of potatoes, bread and cereals eaten has come since World | War II. The total amount of i all foods we eat remains about the same. If you arc lucky enough to have a choice of sites, choose one as near the house as possible This is for convenience, protection and availability of water for irrigation. Stay away from large trees for two reasons?they have extensive root systems which will compete with the vegetables for moisture, and they produce shade. Most vegetables like full sun. Avoid soils which are poorly drained. If you have a new home, be on the look-out for mortar, brick, stumps and other debris that may have covered while establishing a final grade.
