GOOD USED FURNITURE C & S SALES NEXT TO WARREN RECORD The Fabric Doctor | i^?g?? ? ?mimj Is It Safe To Have A Contour Belt Drycleaned?" Asks Miss S. C. P. Dear Miss S. C. P.: Fabric covered contour belts, probably, give dry cleaners and their customers more headaches than any other single item of apparel. Sometimes the belt backing stiffens or the fabric cover ing ripples, stains or sepa rates from the backing. Sometimes the eyelets ravel or tear. All this results from the special construction of contour belts. Drycleaners know that belts of any type present cleaning problems, but con tour belts, stitched or un stitched. are especially trou blesome. Because they are curved to fit the body ai the waist they cannot be sewn in a straight line Stitched contour belts are made with fabrics stretched over cardboard interlinings, then machine stitched to a plastic backing. Usually eye lets are not stitched and are subject to raveling or tear ing. When stitched belts are drycleaned the plastic back ing shrinks, making the fab ric ripple. Unstitched belts arc fastened to cardboard by an adhesive Unstitched belts often separate from the backing or the adhesive may stain the fabric or the fab ric may separate from the buckle. Your drycleaner should in form you that cleaning of contour belts is extremely hazardous, even when care fully hand-cleaned. They can be cleaned, Miss S. C. P., but the extreme care and extra time that need to be taken may require an extra cleaning charge. Good luck, but don't expect miracles on this tricky item.
