DREW Connty Negro Home Ec. Agent DOROTHY RUTH EDGE Assistant County Negro Home Ec. Agent Phone 204-1 "CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS CAN STRENGTHEN FAMILY LIFE" Because Christmas is the birthday of the Christ Child, it holds a special meaning for the family. Christmas started with a baby in the manger? the Christ of History?but Christmas is kept alive when the Christ of History becomes for each person, the Christ of Experience. As families try to keep Christmas, they are re minding the world that Christ is a part of their lives today? not just a fact of history. As they offer their gifts of faith, hope, and love, they are put ting into practice this thought "Not only at Christmas But all the year through The joy you give to others Is the joy that comes to,you. The road to Bethlehem runs right through The homes of folks like me and you." Christian parents are becom ing increasingly concerned over the need for making faith a family affair?of living day by day the religion they profess. Family traditions at Christmas time may include the tree, Santa Claus, gifts, cards, the big family dinner, but Christ mas offers a rare opportunity to emphasize the spiritual more than the material values of the holiday season. Some have said that Christmas can be a "hollowday" if we do not place emphasis on the true meaning of the season rather than on the festive holiday. "MAY WE WISH YOU THE VERY MERRIEST OF CHRISTMASES" Carefully blended with friend ship Lightly tossed with good cheer Thoroughly simmered with laughter Generously sprinkled with lov ing hearts And garnished with an abund ance of delicious holiday foods. Reams Shows Film At Lions Meeting (Omitted Last Week) Frank Reams showed a film on Tornadoes and Hurricanes at the regular meeting of the Lions Club at Hotel Warren on last Frid.ay evening. Reams was presented by Harold R. Skillman, who was in charge of the program. The film?described as quite interesting by a member of the club yesterday?described the work of the Weather Bureau in tracking down and report ing hurricanes and tornadoes, and told of precautions that might be taken by citizens to minimize damage from such violent storms. President Duke Jones pre sided over the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Mitchell will spend the holidays at Jack sonville, Fla., with Dr. and Mrs. J. G. Lyerly and daughter. Negro FARM AGENT NEWS LEONARD C. COOPER Negro County Agent L W. MURFREE Ait- Negro County Agent ANOTHER CHRISTMAS Christmas, the Christian sea son of light, love, loveliness and good will does not always find us in a Christmas atmos phere. Sometimes the season of happiness comes where gloom is large, sickness deep, and fears prevail. In the long history of the Church men have kept Christmas in times famine, pestilence, depres sion and war. Christmas does not always come where lights are bright, trees green, gifts plentiful, bodies strong, and hearts liberated from dull shadows. Once more war threatens at the season when we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace. We hear the sound of marching feet and the rattle of sabries. It may help us, how ever, to remember that Christ /as born when darkness cov ered the land. He was born when frost bit deeply into the earth's crust, and little fires warmed only the hands of chilled men. He came when the "great ones" of the earth were absorbed in their own self-centered pleasures, and the masses lived with the poor pleasures of the poor. I like to recall that when He came the humblest of men were honored firri. the unedu cated, uncultured, unclean shepherds of the hills. The great message came to the 'common people" who are of ten uncommonly extraordinarj like to remember that when He came the humblest place on earth, a stable, shone with the splendor of a throne room. I like to think that when He came, He came directly through the love of a woman named Mary, and indirectly through a man named Joseph, who made their love for each other God's pathway to the needs of the world. When He came a manger was bed enough. In the modern world Cae sar's soldiers still shake the earth, darkness is still present, and all thoughtful people feel the chill of the frost-time and the inadequacy of our little fires of hopefulness. But there is one thought we must not forget: God is still God. The world is still His world. He who sent His Son to save the world, using Mary as His means, Joseph as His servant, shepherds as His welcoming committee, and angels as His messengers of light, has not forgotten us. Even in times as chaotic as these. He is with us. Are we with Him? ?Walter R. Courtenav, D. D. AT THIS HOLY SEASON "Just as Mary held a baby within her arms that night, Just as there were shepherds and a star to shed its light, Just as it was Christmas in the stable where He lay. May it be Christmas in your heart and home this Christmas Day." Witnesses Attend Training Program Members of the Warrenton Congregation of Jehovah's Wit nesses returned to Warrenton Sunday night after a three-day ministry training program in Greenville. The 266 delegates present for the Friday even session found their numbers had swollen to 338 by the time of Sunday's keynote address, "Uniting Men in a Split Up World," deliver ed by H. L. Brissett, special representative of the Watch tower Bible and Tract Society of New York. In his address Mr. Brissett stressed that the principle nec essary to attain unity in recog nition of a central authority. "Human efforts," he said, "such as the United Nations, pacts and alliances, world fed erations, and ecumenical move ments have failed to bring un ity." "True unity," continued Brissett, "is found in recogniz ing God as the supreme au thority; love for God, which means respect for his divine law and worship in spirit and truth; love foi neighbor which means having concern for the welfare of others, respect for their rights and property and ( the removal of racial and polii ical barriers; love for scrip tural truth. We need God's spirit and His Kingdom for good government rather than human systems of rule." J. R. Davis, local presiding minister, said: "Through dem onstrations, talks, and discus sions we receive vital instruc tion pertinent to our Bible ed ucational work in the commun ity. We will now be in a much better position to fulfill our ministerial obligations by applying the things learned." Patronize the acvertlsers. Mrs. J. L. Newsome of Ral eigh and Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Rose and son, Bob, of Hen derson were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Robertson, Sr., on Sunday.
