Conservation
Increase Much
Needed In 1962
! Tar Heel farmers have an
i opportunity in 1962 for mak
ing better use of their Agri
cultural Conservation Program
than ever before, according to
A, P. Hassell. Jr., Executive
Director for the Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation
State Committee.
With a continued need to
shift production of some acre
age of soil depleting crops,
farmers have unequaled op
portunity to use the Agricul
tural Conservation Program in
the seeding of grasses and
legumes, Hassell said. In do
ing this, cooperating farmers
will not only be helping to
bring production in balance
but they will be building re
serves in the soil to meet fu
ture needs.
The seeding of grasses and
legumes is only a part of the
job of most effective conser
vation. The 1962 Agricultural
Conservation Program also
contains practices providing for
the application of liming ma
terials on farmland, contour]
stripcropping, forest tree plant
ing, construction of farm ponds
for livestock water or irriga
tion, construction of sod water-]
ways and several others.
To help farmers use the pro
gram to the best advantage,
elected farmer ? committeemen
are available in every farming
commnuity. Hassell, urges all
farmers to use these men in
analyzing the conservation'
needs on their farms. "Conser
vation can be the salvation of
farmers in their need," he said
"They should all go by their
local ASCS Office, discuss their
conservation needs with the
personnel there and. if their
needs can be met through the
program, they should sign the
necessary papers on that visit."

building was completed the last
week in November, but fix

The fixtures arrived here
this week and were installed

closing Tuesday.
The new building, which is
located on the corner of Mos

contains 3,147 square feet of
floor space and a loading plat

parking space is also available.
Work on the building was be
gun last July.
R. B. Patterson, postmaster,
said here Wednesday morning
that it would take about two
weeks to really get everything
in order. He requests that pa
trons cooperate with postal
workers and if they need any
assistance in working the new
combinations to fool free to
call on one of the post office
workers for help.
Patterson has served as post
master here for 25 years. He
said the post office had been
in the same building on North
Main Street for approximately
40 years, having been moved
there from the Ben Browning
building across the railroad.
