Agriculturally Speaking Gin Rummy Is Played Warren Plains Style By FRANK W. REAMS County Agricultural Agent COMING EVENTS Jan. 18-19: Cattleman's Con ference, State College Jan. 20-22: Manage ment Training School for Cot ton Ginners, State College Jan. 30-Feb. 1: Pest Control Operators School, State College GIN RUMMY Just recently 1 dropped by a Warren Plains filling station and became fascinated with a hot game of Gin Rummy. After the routine greetings, I sat down as a spectator. This game had so many cards and other combinations I inquired as to what set of rules they followed. One player looked me square in the eye saying, "Boy, this is Warren Plains j style. It is not played like this] anywh ..-e in the world and don'i you question it either." This was a happy group, watch ing every move and much more intent on the game than the State-Duke fans were at the recei.t gam? in Durham. 1 The seats of their pants were getting plenty of exercise and with the fun involved it could be said such was beneficial. A little fun is good because with in a few weeks these same men will be doing the twist in a tractor seat. BIRD DOG On reliable authority, I learn ed that a few days ago that James C. White, Norlina, has a bird dog that has out-dated Emily Post's rules of courtesy. It was stated that the two bird dogs of Mr. White were following up a flushed covey, that dog No. 1 located a dead bird, picked it up and and started toward Mr. White. About the same time, No. 2 pointed another bird. While dog No. 1 was trotting toward Mr. White he observed dog No. 2 in his path. Graciously No. 1 stopped dead, held the bird and waited for No. 2 and Mr. White to flush the stray bird. After the shots. No. 1 delivered his bird and No. 2 speedily raced to locate and, return his game. It is my opinion Mr. White will have a "no sale" sign on these dogs for years to come.) This is another form of rec reation that snares a large number of participants all over Warren County. HUNTING COURTESIES Hunting on the property of! another, without consent is a serious violation of law and ? decent courtesy. Just recently j I was told by a livestock farm er in the Inez community thai he found one of his beef cat tie shot, with death following within a few days. Regardless of how much anyone likes hunt ing, this is considered a low down grand rascal act. Leav ing gates 'open and breaking down wire when crawling ovei fences is a serious and destruc tive act. A hunter recently in formed me he lost a lot ol faith when a city man who is dispenser of religion as a pro fession changed from a sheep's to wolf's clothes when hunting Thank goodness, most people are not like this, but 10% car do more damage than 90% car rebuild. It is poor sportsman ship to assume hunting is fail game for all. The Inez Community Clu: now has a plan under studj that may prove very worth while for their area. It appears hunting refuges may be a so lution. Most land owners de sire to cooperate with cooperat ing hunters, so may I say here play the rules of the game, be cause, just remember whe" you hunt on another person's property you are their guesl and if not there by invitation understanding, or consent, yoi are Just plain trespassing. Never before have agricultural statistics been so important to the in dividual farm, says Agriculture Commissioner L. Y. Ballentine. Long as essential tool for agricultural leaders in planning farm programs, statistical rec ords take on a new meaning with the number of new pro grams now being considered, he said. , "North Carolina's county farm census meant millions of dollars to North Carolina grow ers by establishing individual farm 'histories' when acreage controls were first applied to tobacco and cotton and later to other crops," he pointed out. "Accurate records will mean qually as much with the form ulation of programs for addition al crops and livestock produc tion." Ballentine urged that farm ers use special care to be ac curate in their listings for the 1962 county census now in process. Listings are taken each year during the tax listing pe riod for each county. "In most counties the tax listers also take the farm cen sus listings, and it is believed that some farmers fail to give complete information because they think such information will be used for tax purposes," he said. "This is not the case. YOUR PROFIT THIS YEAR... "However, as new marketing, agreement or other types of control programs are adopted the individual listings will helpj to establish production history for both individual farms and { individual counties." "The county census figures have been valuable within the counties to show the trends in production, but greater accur-' acy in listing is needed, regard less of whether or not there i3, any prospect of a control pro gram for a given commodity,", he said. "Farming is increas ingly a competitive business op-1 eration requiring increasingly ] careful planning at the farm1 and county level. Such plan-! ning can be done effectively j only on the basis of accurate information. "Therefore, I urge every, farmer to make their census! listing this month and to give thought to making it the most complete listing possible." i Social Security Questions And Answers Q. A marine captain and a lieu tenant were having a friendly argument about the amount of work involved in wooing a girl. The captain claimed it was 80 per cent pleasure and 20 per cent work; but the lieutenant said he regarded it as more like 75 per cent pleasure and 25 per cent work. They decid ed they'd get a third vote, so asked the driver of the jeep they were riding in what he thought of It They told the private to speak out. "Yes, sir," replied the pri vate, "It aure must be 100 per cent pleasure, because if there was any work in it -at all, you officers would have us enlisted men taking care of it" Glasses have amazing effect on vision ? especially after they have been filled several I Sec. 901, 1941 Machinery Act in Part Provides: "It shall be the duty of every person, firm, or corporation, in whose name any property or poll is to be listed, to list said Real, Personal Property or Poll with the proper list taker within the time allowed by law.
