Negro FARM AGENT NEWS LEONARD C. COOPER Negro County Agent l W. MURFREE A?*t. Negro County Agent "WHAT TOBACCO VARIETY TO PLANT?" On the minds o? many farm ers, there still remains the question of what variety of to bacco to plant. With the time for seeding plant beds near at hand, farmers should do some serious thinking, and consider producing quality as well as variety. Farmers should study carefully the many dis ease problems of tobacco in the county as well as the per formance and results on their farms before reaching a de cision as to what variety to plant. In treating your plant beds, be sure to follow manufactur ers' recommendations and ob serve the weather; it is ad visable to wait for favorable -weather- for best results. Remember, it has been prov *'en to be a fact that you get better results by not seeding your plant bed too thick. In most instances, our seeds are better than the preparation <)and care given our plant beds. If properly prepared and han dled, one-fourth ounce of seed per 100 square yards should do the job. Yes, some farmers are getting good results by using one-sixth ounce per 100 yards. Thick seeding produces thick stands of weak, spindly trans plants, and a poor stand in the fields. But moderate seed ing encourages the growth of medium, bushy transplants which will get the crop off to a good start. Regardless of what variety you plant, make it a point not to over-seed your beds this year. Farmers' may secure bulletins entitled, "Tobacco Plant Pro duction Guide," and additional tobacco information at the County Negro Agricultural Agents Office. Announcement By Negro Agent PEGGIE P.
