PERFORMANCE TESTING OF BEEF CATTLE Robert and Charles Fleming of the Vicksboro "Community are cooperating with the Exten sion Service in performance testing of beef cattle. The ob jective of this activity com pares with the Dairy Herd Im provement Association program among dairy farmers. Cooperat ing beef producers pay fees for this service similar to DHIA. On round-up day, shortly before weaning, the calves are pinned separately from the cows for weighing and grading. In the picture above you see Robert Fleming releasing a calf from the mobile scales. Juat behind Mr. Fleming is James Patterson recording the weight and to his rear is Charles Fleming and a helper arrang ing to drive another calf on the scales. After weighing and identifying the calf from ear tags, each calf is inspected to determine the grade. If the calves sired by a certain bull results in average or low grade calves then it is time to sell the old boy and locate a prov en bull. If the cow is not of high quality .sell for beef. This is a good program and we hope other beef producers wil drop by to sign an appll-1 cation.
