THE WARREN RECORD U. S. Water Use Rapidly In U. States WASHINGTON?The people of America are using more water | than ever to keep cool, clean, and occupied. Water consumption by fac tories, farms, and homes has jumped more than 12 percent in the past six years. The Un ited States gulps its liquid as estets at the rate of 270,000 million gallons per day (mgd), says the National Geographic Society. The greatest water glutton is not the hot tennis player or suburban gardner but Ameri can industry. Industrial cool ing processes account for more than half of the water consum ed in this country. It takes 65,000 gallons of water to pro duce a ton of finished steel, I 200,000 gallons for a ton of rayon, and no less than 600,000 gallons for a ton of synthetic rubber. Irrigation Ranks Second crs, sprinklers, swimming pools, Irrigation farmers rank as second largest users of water, followed by individuals at work, play, and home. Billions of gallons go down the drain annually from such modern conveniences as show ers, sprinklers, swimming pools, dishwashers, laundro mats, and garbage disposals. Sheer waste takes a heavy toll. Even during New York's severe water shortage of 1949 1950, engineers estimated that 200 million gallons a day drip ped from leaky faucets and pipes alone. Water-hungry America for tunately can draw on a nation wide rainfall averaging 30 in ches a year, or ten million gal lons for every man, woman, and child. However, more than 70 per cent is used by growing plants or returned to the atmosphere by evaporation and breathing. Storage lakes, reservoirs, and canals lose nearly half their OES Meets In Regular Session LITTLETON ? The regular monthly meeting of the Royal Hart Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star was held Monday night in the Masonic Hall in Littleton. Mrs. Mable R. Hale, Worthy Matron, and Sol B. Bobbitt, Worthy Patron pro-tem, presided in the east. Routine business matters were discussed and several re ports were made, including the secretary's and treasurer's re ports. The sick and cheer committee was instructed to send cards to some parents of members who are sick. Plans were made to attend the sixth district school of in struction at Norlina on Wed nesday, August 8, from 2:00 to 5:00 p m. with a banquet sup per to follow at 6:30 p. m. Mrs. Hale appointed a commit tee to decorate the banquet table for the school of instruc tion. Plans for the official visit of the District Deputy Grand Matron, Mrs. Estelle Joyner of Louisburg, and the District Deputy Grand Patron, John Simpson of Wilson, to the Royal Hart Chapter were made They will visit here on Monday, August 20. Mrs. Hale thanked the group for their cooperation with the picnic supper Wednesday night of last week honoring the Masons. Several arrangements of summer flowers decorated the Masonic Hall. Present for the meeting were Mrs. Mable R. Hale, Sol B. Bobbitt, Miss Mary E. Shearin, Mrs. Tempie B. Far mer, Mrs. Alma H. Ward, Mrs. Louise Haithcock, Mrs. Ann S. Browning, Mrs. Pattie S. Reid, Mrs. Louise L. Williams, Mrs. Gertrude H. Benton, Mrs. Pearl W. Bobbitt, Mrs. Browning B. King, and Mrs. Lula Mae Crawley. Refreshments at Ice- cream and cookies were served dur ing the social hour. You're Fired The head of a television net work who was having trouble with his program department called in his executives for a lecture: "Look," he said, "you guys have got to get on the baU. That's all there Is to it If we have any bottlenecks around here, I want you to get rid of them immediately. Now, who has any suggestions?" From the rear of the con ference room a Junior execu tive piped up. "Sir," be said, "P-'e had some experience with bottles, and from that experi ence 1 can tell you, the are always at the topi" water In vapor. Moreover, water is not ever ly distributed. Mountaii ous regions of Hawaii may b deluged with a foot of rai a week, yet Nevada average only nine inches all year. Som areas are flooded in the sprin areas which are flooded in th spring suffer drought by lat summer. Lids On Lakes The Herculean task of sut plying water to arid zones an cities where demand exceed supply is being approached i several ways: conservatio measures, nottably antipolli tion and the reuse of watei the building of larger aqut ducts; and conversion of fresl water from the sea. Scientists have been exper; menting with a chemical spra which blankets reservoirs an lakes with a film to cut evaj oration by governments am private industry. Success on large and inexpensive sea) could open up a vast new re source, for oceans cover a most three-quarters of t h earth's surface. The idea of desalting wate is not new. In 49 B. C., durini his siege of Alexandria, F.gypi Julius Caesar produced fresl water for .his troops with sola evaporation. It is assumed tha the condensing vapor was col lected by oiled silk or fabri screens.
