Negro FARM AGENT NEWS LEONARD C. COOPER Negro County Agent L W. BURFREE Asst. Negro County Agent HARVEST SWEET POTATOES There are two basic rules for saving sweet potatoes success fully? (1) harvest the crop before frost and (2) handle with care to avoid bruising. If you store the sweet potatoes for home use or market, care ful curing methods must be followed and the potatoes held in a cool, moist storage. In the curing process potatoes will lose 6 to 8 per cent weight due to loss of moisture and change of starch to sugar. The moisture must be carried off, yet humidity In the cub ing house should range be tween 70 and 90 per cent?85 per ccnt is ideal. After a week or 10 days curing?when scars are all healted and pota toes have a velvety feel? maintain the same moisture content and keep storage tem perature near 55 degrees Fah renheit. To insure careful handling in the field the grower should (1) provide cotton gloves for workers so that fingernails will not cut skins of the sweet po tatoes when "scratched" out of the soil and placed in contain ers; (2) prevent heap rows and always pick up carefully one row at a time to avoid bruising; and (3 provide an adequate number of containers readily available. To avoid bruises and scratches, handle sweet potatoes like they were eggs. Feed Dairy Cows Better Pasture herbage gets tough in fall. Grazing is often sparse and dairy cows fail to get enough nutrition from pas ture to maintain high milk production. The fall slump is more a result of low feed in take than seasonal, though chilly nights and cold rains do require extra nutrition for body maintenance. As pas tures go back, bam feeding must come forward to keep milk flowing. Give the cows more silage for succulence and energy. Feed hay more frequently. In crease grain allowance as pro duction warrants. Take these management steps gradually but promptyl. Don't wait for the cows to remind you of them with lowered milk pro duction. New Approach. A wife pointed to her hus band stretched out in the hammock and explained to her friend: "Fred's hobby is letting the birds watch him!" C. W.
