News and Society Items Mr. Charles Davis of New ' York is visiting relatives here and in Inez and Ridgeway. Richard Williams and Bobby Edmonds left Monday to enter the University of North Caro lina in Chapel Hill. Miss Faye Bowen spent the weekend in Ayden. Miss Emily Burt Person vis-! ited relatives in Louisburg' during the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Woodall visited relatives in Washington, J N. C., over the weekend. Farmer and Mr. Billy Farmer spent last week at Wrightsville Beach and the weekend with relatives in Wendell. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Boyce visited Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cheek and family in Kinston this week. Mrs. Preston Edsell of Ral eigh was a guest of Miss Nora King this week. Mrs. Mary T. Humbrickhouse, Mrs. Eula T. Young and Mrs. Alyce Farrar of Boydton, Va., were luncheon guests of Mrs. W. R. Baskervill on Tuesday. Mrs. H. E. Howard of Atlan ta, Ga? visited her mother, Mrs. W. P. Rodwell, here this week. Mrs. Rodwell returned with her for a visit of several weeks. Mrs. Julius Banzet spent sev eral days last week in New York with her sister and fam ily, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Newton and daughters, Nancy and Betsy, who are leaving this week to spend two years In Okinawa. Mrs. Newton is the former Miss Nan Hawks of Warrenton. Mrs. H. M. Gardner and grandson, Hamilton Gardner, of Ellabell, Ga., are visiting In the home of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Gardner of Churchill this week. Brig. General and Mrs. W. T. Fitts of Asheville visited their family here last week for several days. Mrs. C. E. Parker and little son visited relatives in Alexan dria. Va., for several days last week. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Beddoe and Mr. and Mrs. John G. Mitchell attended the funeral of Mr. Hayward Duke In Greensboro on Sunday. He was a former resident of War renton. Mrs. S. A. Robinson of Lin colnton spent the weekend here with Mr. and Mrs. A1 Williams and family. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Wood, Jr., and little son left Monday for Chapel Hill after spending the summer months here. Miss Edith Allen and Mr and Mrs. R. H. Broom of Ral eigh spent the weekend with Miss Edith Broom in Fayette ville. She is a patient in Highsmith Hospital there, re cuperating from injuries sus tained in a fall. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. James and little daughter, Peggy Ann, of Richmond, Va., were week end guests of Mr. and Mr?. S. B. Gibson and family. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Parrott, Jr., and family of Goldaboro were guests of Mrs. G. Wesson under went an operation in Warren General Hospital on Monday. Relatives visiting her on Moo day were Mrs. W. H. Wesson, Jr., of Columbia, S. C., Mrs. J. R. Matthews, Mrs. Elizabeth Cage and Mrs. G. G. Martin, Jr., of LaCrosse, Va. In Hospital Mr. A. P. Rodwell of War ! ren Plains was a patient in I Warren General Hospital this I week for treatment. J. Haywood Duke Dies At Greensboro GREENSBORO?Joseph Hay wood Duke, 58, hotel operator known throughout the south, died at his home Saturday. Duke, a native of Dunn who moved to Elizabeth City in early childhood, was associat ed with Duke Inn at Elizabeth City for a number of years. He managed hotels in the Greensboro area, and at the time of bis death, was asso ciated with the King Cotton Hotel here. He was past pres ident of the North Carolina Hotel Ass'n., and a member of the Episcopal church. Funeral services were con ducted at 2:30 p. m. Sunday j from the Trinity Episcopal Church here. Burial was in' Elizabeth City on Monday. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Elizabeth Savage Etheridge Duke; two daughters, Mrs.' Dwigbt M. Davidson, Jr., of Greensboro and Mrs. Peter George Seaman, Jr., of Chapel Hill. Taylor Taking Advance Course CHAPEL HiLL ? William' Woodruff Taylor, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor of War-! renton, has been named one of 49 'superior freshmen" at the University of North Carolina who will pursue a course in honors program. The Freshman Honors pro gram was established as an ex perimental venture at the Uni versity in 1954 and met with such success that in 1957 the Carnegie Corporation gave a $100,000 grant for the pro gram's expansion. About 50 students each year are named to it. The students attend advance ed fundamental courses taught by selected faculty members. The courses are meant to be harder and rougher and more demanding than courses for students following the regular , college schedule. Taylor is a graduate of John Graham High School. He in tends to major in law at the University. In Hospital Mr. Wade Taylor is a patient in North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, for treat ment.
