Credit Is Good, But Should Be Used Wisely Credit can be a profitable tool In iiKnwfyl farming but only if tha tanner know* when be ?hwM borrow. Farm people have consider ed indebtedness a* an indica tion <rf pour management, points out Dr. Robert L. John ston*,, extension farm man agement specialist at North Carolina State College. "This attitude has largely disappeared in progressive farming areas," be said. "It is generally recognized that, in the majority of areas a farm business does not return sufficient profit to provide family living expenses and also to allow financing major adjustments on a cash basis without credit." If credit is to be used in the farm business, a basic question to be answered by the farmer is: "When does it pay," Johnstone related. "There is no simple answer and nearly every farm situa tion is different. Briefly, it will pay to borrow when the investment made will result in an income increase greater than the total added cost." Johnstone explained that generally, this increased in come results from the new investment bringing about a more efficient use of existing resources. He cited examples such as borrowing money for ferti lizer to increase yields, or for machinery to get a greater output per hour of labor, or for additional land to utilize machinery or the fanner's ca pabilities. "But if a farmer borrows to purchase a larger tractor in order to save family labor, yet he has no profitable use for the labor saved, it will result in a smaller net income" said Johnstone. Similar reasoning could be applied to the purchase of harvesting equipment when the farmer doesn't have enough crops to use it at near its capacity. The overhead costs frequently push the har vesting cost far past the charge of the ' local custom operator. "In planning ? business ex pansion, the owner must al ways consider the additional managerial requirements in 3 pe rating the larger busi ness," said Johnstone. "It is not unusual to see a business man do a profitable Job with t small operation but be un "He should budget each al ternative u ? d ? r various weather and pries conditions.
