GARDEN TIME * rVI t ( . . 1 I ll 111' I t\l ( '.'it.- ( ttlit ?, A real good bulletin hu| just been released by Uie USD A Which you should know about. The title: "Con trolling Insects on Flowers." The bulletin covers the de scription and control of about 400 insects which attack flowers and is well illustrat ed with many illustrations in color. Attention is also call ed to the proper use of dusts and sprays, equipment, and precautions to observe when handling and applying insecti cides. The bulletin is for sale by the Superintendent of Docu ments, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington. 25, D. C. The price is 40c per copy. If you wish to have for reference an au thentic publication in a small package, I can highly recom mend this one. A Rockingham. N. C.. read er, who was kind enough to give "Garden Time" a little boost, is having quite a prob lem with pine needles on his lawn. He has almost an acre, excluding the hooce site, in hit lot and it is "full of pines." His question is how to control pine straw so that ; he can have both summer i and winter grass. | I have written him for ad j ditional information relative to the kind(s) of pine trees in his lawn and the number. When I hear from him I will J try to help. I bring this question up because i have a friend who ? has a yard full of loblolly | pines. He has solved his problem by making no at tempt to have grass, and, in i his case, it works real well . He doesn't have a weed problem either. Around the house and in i the side and backyard, he j has very effectively used con vex-leaf and dotundifolia hol . lies, sasanqua and japonica camellias and azaleas. Since : all of his plants in his land j scape plan are evergreen, I some of them winter bloom ' ers, he has color of either flower or foliage throughout crowing in which Iktjr like. Uy collaaguaa in FwwU? toll me that pine* do not like grass. Thi? ha* alao been my observation. Neither do they like the high nitrogen level necessary to keep graaa green and grow ing. They will respond to I phoaphorua and potash. Mr. and Mrs. Willie Rooker oi Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Rooker and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Rooker and fam ily of Norfolk, Vs., are guests of Mrs. T. H.
