COTTON The "kick-off" for an all- i out attack on the boll wee-1 vill and other crop insects' was launched at the Warren County Fairgrounds last Fri day. A good crowd turned out to observe farm machine ry dealers and customs op erators display their equip ment that will effectively apply the chemicals that will do the job. Machinery experts demon strated how to prepare the equipment for multiple use. The importance of the right I nozzle, water pressure and | numerous other adjustments i were actually demonstrated. | under control and you will ' produce profitable cotton." j Most farmers do a good job of everything except control the parasitic weevil. If you control this sharecropper you will be living in high cotton, but let these tnsectsr have their way and you will have plenty of cotton foliage but little lint to exchange for greenbacks. According to the April 5 issue of the Warren County ASCS Newsletter, we have an original cotton allotment, of 8,115.3 acres. Fanners re quested an additional acreage of 1235.1 acres; 1120.3 acres were released, so to make up the difference, an addit ional 114.8 acres was received from the state office, which | will add up to 8230.1 avail able acres for 1963. Our gross cotton income dur ing 1962 was $836,740 96. By following a sound production and boll weevil control pro gram we can expect an extra gross income during 1963 of $621,998.94. This "ain't" hay, this is cash. I In the picture above you, see cotton opening at the 1 rate of a bale per acre. I ALFALFA WEEVIL | The ilfalfa weevil is in ifr ?' full swirtg. As a practical measure, suggest you make an early first cutting and then spray with Malathion. From what I hear, those al falfa producers applying Hep-; tachlor in the fail are free! of the pests but it is a vio-1 lation to apply this chemical j in the spring, so that is the | reason Malathion is recom-! mended. Malathion is a quick I killer and its poisonous ef-1 fects disintegrates after a; few days. ] BLUE MOLD Blue mold has reached a southern North Carolina so you are urged to start treat-1 ing when the plants are the; until 'Transplanted in the, field. Suggest you use fer mate or diathane, either spray or dust. CADA The following people repre senting Warren County were observed at the CADA 7 county meeting at Smithfield last Thursday: C. P. Gaaton, Marvin Newsom, J. M. Stokes, Joe Newsom, Roger Moore and - the writer. It was an excellent program where de tails of the Smithfield Plan and Ham and Egg Show were described. Roger Moore won the prized dozen eggs. All of ??- had our fingers crossed hoping to win the fancy ham also, so a future ham and egg breakfast could have beeW arranged in War ren County.
