Hawkins Graduate Wins More Than $2900 In Scholarships A 1963 Hawkins High School graduate, Miss Nannie Kearney, has received more than $2,900 in scholarship funds?including the Warren Cotton and Fertilizer Co. scholarship of $500. The daughter of Mr and Mrs. Richard Kearney of Rt. 3. Warrenton, Miss Kearney ranked first among nine Haw kins graduates winning more than $8,500 grants for post high school education. In addition to the Warren Cotton and Fertilizer Co. scholarship, awarded for the first time this year. Miss Kearney received the A&T College scholarship for $2,400 and the Hawkins High School scholarship of $25. Announce ment of the awards was made by Hawkins Principal J. E. Byers. Other Hawkins winners in-1 eluded Raymond Clavton Per- i ry, the North Carolina Col k'ge scholarship of $1,000 and the Hawkins scholarship of $25: Willie Beatrice Mayfield. the Johnson C Smith Univer sity Scholarship of S150 and the Warren County Teachers Association scholarship of $75. Shannon Turner, the NCC scholarship of $1,000 and the Multi-County Civic Educational scholarship of SI 14 Viola Watson, the South eastern Business College scholarship of $200: Margaret V Pulley, the Fayetteville State Teachers College Schol arship of $1,600: Annie Bur nett. the Shaw University scholarship of $1,200; Corin th ia Diane Houser. the Shaw University scholarship of $150 ind a work-aid grant of $75; and Banzet Spruill. the St Augustine College scholarship of S150 per semester. The nine scholarship win ners were among a record cliiss of 139 students who re ceived diplomas at the schools commencement exer cises May 30. Dr Frank B. John Graham High School Senior, received the Warren Cotton and Fertilizer Com pany's S500 scholarship dur ing commencement exercises at the local school on Thurs day night of last week. Hurst, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hurst, will attend Wesleyan College. Rocky Mount, and work toward a B.S. degree leading to medi cine. Other scholarship winners were; Cassandra Carty Jones, the Future Teachers of Amer ica's $30.00 scholarship: Myra Jeanette Reavis, the Warren ton Woman's Club's $150 scholarship. She will work toward a B.S. degree in Nurs- j ing at East Carolina College, Greenville. The Ward Scholarship re cipient was Harriet Joan Cheek. In addition several Ward scholarships were con tinued for those already in college. Joyce Weaver and Joanj Short were recipients of loans I from the Warrenton Educa-i tional Foundation. [ NHS Valedictorian Wins 2 Scholarships For College Work Miss Dinah Clarke, vale dictorian of the Norlina High School Senior Class, received both the Lily Wood and the Norlina Ruritan scholarships in commencement exercises held at the Norlina school on Thursday night of last week. The Wood scholarship is val ued at $200 and the Ruritan scholarship is valued at $100. Betsy Ellington received the War Bond donated by the Norlina Woman's Club. Other seniors receiving re cognition were: Linda Draffin, salutatorian; Cliffie King, D. A. R. Good Citizen; Wayne Lynch, best boy athlete: Anne Edwards, best girl athlete; Philip Bender, best all-round boy; and Betsy Ellington, best all-round girl. Davis, Route 1, War renton, will lead a delegation of eight members of the War renton congregation of Je hovah's Witnesses to an in ternational convention of the religious group scheduled for Yankee Stadium in New York July 7 to 14. Conventional officials in New York have announced that 125,000 persons are ex pected to attend the eight day gathering representing the Eastern United States, Canada, Central and South America and the Carribean islands. Davis said three conven tions are planned in the Unit ed States this summer. In addition to the New York gathering, conventions are scheduled for County Stadium in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, June 30 to July 7, and the Hose Bowl, Pasadena, Califor nia, September 1 to 8.
