Coach Janice Allen's lassies closed oul their season Willi their 16th win as they rallied from an 11-6 first quarter de ficit to topple Littleton, 33-28. Warrenton's sextet, which lost their only game of the year to Littleton during regular-sea son play, came to life in the second quarter and jumped in front of Coach Ross Lane's charges by a single point, 16 15, at intermission. In the third quarter Warrenton padd ed its lead as it poured in nine points while holding Littleton to seven. Knox Polk, playing her last game for the winning John Gra ham aggregation, scored six points in the final minutes and finished with 12 points for the night and scoring honors for both clubs. Gail Fleming had eight points for the winners and Vivian Abbott tossed in seven. Gail Stainback, hitting from beneath the boards, led Littleton with 10 points. Dot Hilliard contributed nine and Weaver finished with six. Both teams had 12 field goals but Warrenton managed to hit on nine charity tosses while Littleton connected on only four free throws. Brenda Clark and Helen An drews grabbed defensive honors for Warrenton and Dot Hilliard paced Littleton's defensive ef forts. Warrenton advanced to the tourney finals by rolling past Davie after drawing a first round bye. Littleton, which end ed the season in third place, dropped second-place Enfield in the semi-finals to gain the right to play for the tournament Championship. In the nightcap Weldon ex hibited a balanced scoring at tack as it shelled William R. Davie, 68-52, to capture tour nament laurels in the boys di vision. With some strong defensive play to back up their torrid scoring punch the Tornadoes had very little trouble stopping Davie, while their gunners had a field day. Weldon Jumped into a 14-7 lead after the first quar i>r of play and by the half had increased itto 29-18. In the sec one half of play they continued to build up their lead by out scoring Davie 17-13 In the third frame and 22-21 in the fourth. Halifax - Warren Conference , teams. Wise, a senior, was a lead | ing scorer and playmaker for | the tournament champion Tor j nadoes and Miss Polk paced the ; regular season and tournament | champion Warrenton girls j team. Warrer.ton's boys won their I divisional title in regular sea ' son play with a perfect 14-0 [ record, but were upset in the tournament last week by Wil liam R. Davie. Warrenton's A1 Blalock was the second most popular player with the first five being round ed off by Davie star Billy Watson, Enfield ace Sammy Ewell and Norlina spark Buck ; Wiggins. Others named to the "dream j 10" team are Wayne Gibson of Aurelian Springs. Wes Rothrock of Enfield, Joe Peterson of Wel jdon, Tyrus Woodard of Davie I and Billy Benson of Warrenton. The Warrenton club, which took Its 19th win against two losses, will meet either Gold Sand (23-5) or South Granville (13-14) In an 8:30 p. m. con test next Wednesday in Rocky Mount. South Granville, which brought the only losing mark Into the tournament, will meet Gold Sand tonight. Warrenton, with three play ers scoring in double figures, J jumped Into an early lead! against Bailey Wednesday night and pulled to an 18-8 first quarter advantage. The Jackets, winners of the Halifax-Warren regular season title, led by 31-18 at Intermis sion and held an 11-point ad vantage, 44-33, with six minutes remaining when Coach Jimmy Webb began substituting. With 2:40 remaining, Warrenton held a commanding 51-35 lead. The Jackets connected on 47 per cent of their shots from the floor and posted a 64 per cent charity stripe mark. A1 Blalock with 16 points, led both teams In scoring. Warrenton got a 14-point effort from Roddy Drake and Billy Benson added a dozen markers. John Cole man contributed nine, Ray Shearin three and Willie Nor wood two. Bailey's Deans paced the losers with 12 points. It was Bailey's seventh setback In 25 outings. Warrenton played in the nightcap of a triple header marking the opening round of battle for the 17 teams entered. In other Wednesday night, action, Middleburg, one of two clubs to down Warrenton this season, brought Its w(?n-loss record to 23-1 with a 66-48 pasting of Gaston (18-6). South Granville avenged two regular season losses to Zeb Vance (19-8) by taking a 64-48 de cision. The tournament will continue with two games each night the rest of this week, and will re sume next week.' Quarter-finals are scheduled March 11-12, the semi-finals March 13 and the championship game March 14. Winner of the Dtstrirt Three title will advance to the state championship tournament in Durham. Last year North Edgecombe won the district event here and went on to sweep the state title. The District Three field In cludes the finest Class A teams in Eastern North Carolina. All teams entered are either county ctramptons or runner3 up, and practically all of them have compiled outstandingwon loss records this year. Red Oak High, the Nash County champion, boasts the best record of the 17 teams. The Rebels have won 23 out of 2-1 games, and have swept their last , 19 straight.
