Only three farmers owning irrigation systems in Warren County do not have a farm pond, and one of these plans to construct one in the near future. A dependable source of water is essential for irrigation, and the closer it is to the fields to be irrigated the less will be the cost of ir rigating. Along main line great ly Increases the initial cost of the irrigating system, the cost of operating the sv^'cr.., and the labor required U, Ir rigate. That's why there art so many farm ponds being con structed In Warren County. West farmers that w-.it to construct a pond will request assistance through the Warren Soli Conservation District. A technician from the Soil Con servation Service checks with him to find out Just what the farmer has in mind. He checks pond sites with the farmer, measures acreages and dis tances on the aerial photograph, makes cost estimates, and the farmer has several alternatives to choose from. A farmer just starting to Irrigate decided on how many ponds he will need, when and where to construct them, and how much water to store at each location. A farm er will locate his tobacco to be irrigated by his first pond, and the next year he can build another pond to water addition al tobacco. There are 38 War ren County farmers with two or more irrigation reservoirs. Some farmers construct ponds for insurance against dry weather. These farmers plan to hire their tobacco Irrigated in case of extremely dry weather. During most years a good soak ing when tobacco is going into top will cause it to mature and ripen. Extreme drought can make a crop ver late as was the case around the Gaston Lake last fall. Thank each of you for your cards, flowers, calls, visits and most of all your kind deeds to my family. It wu a great comfort to know so many cared and took the time to think of me. May God blees each of you for your thought MR8. WALLACE HOLTZMAN, Mori in a. conniving most of us have some of It to do. Here are some Ideas that have saved me con siderable work?maybe they will help you. At my place all small trees, shrubs, roses, flowers and to matoes are mulched. The few weeds and grass that comes through are pulled by hand or sprayed with Varsol. I figure that mulching reduces my weed ing by 90 per cent. And too, the plants grow better when mulched. Three to four Inches of pine straw seems to be the ideal material. However, any coarse material that won't pack down and keep out air and water is satisfactory. Coarsely ground corncobs are eood; so are shavings, tobacco stems, straw (grain removed) and pea nut hulls (If sterilized to kill nematodes). Leave your mulch saucer shaped so water will drain to the plant and not away from It. In addition to helping kee p down grass and weeds, a mulch keeps the soil cooler in summer, helps prevent erosion, maintains organic matter, pre vents packing and crusting, and conserves moisture. Young grass and weeds com ing through the mulch can be easily killed with Varsol (Stod dard Solvent). This material is available from most service stations. It can be used under neath and around any plant as long as you do not hit the plant. A small amount of drift won't hurt > tough stem, but complete wetting might cause serious damage. Varsol Is similar to gasoline, except It Is not as explosive?but, don't strike a match close to It. Use at full strength ? It won't mix with water. Varsol won't kill Bermuda grass, but Dowpon will. Dow pon cannot be used however un derneath and around flowers, trees and shrubs. AZALEA LEAF GALL?This disease causes azalea and cam ellia leaves to become thick and fleshy. The galls are covered with a white powered material. The disease is more alarming tnan destructive; so don't get too excited. And, don't send me the leaves?my waste paper basket Is full. At this time of year the only control Is to pick the diseased leaves off and burn them. If you leave them on the bush they will soon dry up and disappear, but Infection might be worse next year. ELIMINATE MOSS?Do you have trouble with moss crowd ing out your grass? If you do, it Indicates that conditions are more favorable for the growth of moss than it is for the growth of grass. Usually the presence of moss Indicates a need of: (1) More lime, (2) more plant nutrients, (3) more sunlight, (4) more air In the soil, or a combination of these factors. The soil can be tested for lime by sending it to the Soil Test ing Laboratory, North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Plenty of nitrogen seems es pecially Important in eradi cating moss. If you do not have your soil tested, a general recommendation is touseafer tlllzer such as 8-8-8 at the rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet In March and again In early October. Sunlight Is also Im portant; you may need to remove some trees or remove low limbs. B you tear up the lawn, use sand or organic matter such as peatmoss or well rotted sawdust. This will tend to open up the soil and provide for bet ter aeration. BEGIN YOUR RIDING FUN - AT - JUDY'S ? Dude Ronth, Inc. HORSES AND PONIES FOR YOUNGSTERS AND ADULTS ? Riding Ring ?
