Calf Shows Are Features Of
Successful Fair Held Here

urday night, was the calf shows |
held by white 4-H members
on Wednesday afternoon, and the!
colored calf show held
on Thursday afternoon. A re
port of the white show was gev
en Thursday morning by h. B.
Hardage, asst. agricultural
agent, a report of winners In
the colored show Is expected
for next week's paper.
The Fair this year was a
definite success, J. B. Thomp
son, Fair manager for the Lions
Club, said yesterday. The ex
hibits were large and of fine
quality and crowds were good,
he said, with the midway, play
ed by Palmetto Shows, being
well attended.
Thompson stressed the [
cleanliness of the Fair, as one
of the best ever held. His jud
gment was confirmed this week
by Sheriff Jim Hundley who said
the crowds were the most or- I
derly he has seen at a Fair.
Food booths were operated
by the Lions Club under the
direction of C. V. Whltford,
and by Negro 4-H Clubs under
the direction of L. C. Cooper.
Wednesday and Thursday,
school days, were big days at
the Fair, Thompson said.
Prizes were given on both days
and special prices were offered
for rides for the school chlld
ren, who were admitted free.
Prize winners at the white
school day Wednesday were:
1st prize, a bicycle, won by
Tommy Llmer, a third grade
student at Aiton - Elberon
School; 2nd prize, a transis
tor radio, won by Alice Moody,
11th grade student at Norllna;
3rd prize, a basketball and goal
set, won by Sears Bugg, 5th
grade student at John Graham.

At the colored school day
Thursday prize winners were:
1st prize, a bicycle, won by
Lonnle Brown, 8th grade student
at North Warren High School;
2nd prize, a transistor radio,
won by Robert Lee Lynch, a

ketball and goal set, won by
Larry King, a sixth grade stu
dent student at John R. Haw

of Embro drew the tickets.
The Warren County junior
Dairy Calf Show was held Wed
nesday afternoon with 18 4-H
club members exhibiting 20 of
their prize calves,
Conrad Bender's Holsteln 2
year-old was declared the grand
champion of the -show. Ronnie
King's 2-year-old Holsteln was
declared the reserve champion.
Ronnie also won the prize for
showmanship. Phillip E. West
exhibited the best fitted animal
In the show.

be part of a bus tour of East

ing to enrollment at the end
of the first two weeks, It was
learned yesterday from the
office of the Superintendent of
Schools.
The total enrollment drop
ped from 6,108 In 1963- 64 to
5,998 for 1964-65.
Enrollment dropped In both
white and colored schools, while
the Hallwa Indian school picked
up enrollment In both the ele
mentary and high school depart
ments.
White enrollment for this
year was 1136 In the elemen
tary school and 550 In the
white high schools, for a total
of 1686, compared with 1963-64
high school enrollment of 522
and elementary enrollment of
522, for a total of 1697:
Colored enrollment for this
year was 2768 In the elemen
tary schools and 1180 in the high
schools for a total of 3948,
compared with the 1963- 64 high
school enrollment of 1160 and
an elementary enrollment of
2904, for a total of 4104.
Both white and Neero hi eh
schools showed gains In enroll
ment for a total high school
enrollment of 1730, compared
with 1682 In 1963-64. White high
school enrollment this year was
550, compared with 522 last
year, and Negro high school
was 1180, compared with 1160
last year.
White elementary enrollment
dropped from 1175 to 1136,
and colored elementary enroll
ment from 2904 to 2768.
The Hallwa elementary en
rollment Increased from 272
to 275, and the Hallwa high
school enrollment from 75 to
89.
Total enrollment In the white
schools of the county for the
two-week period was 1686, with
a non-white enrollment of 4,312.
In 1963-64 the whit e enroll
ment was 1697, compared with
i non-white enrollment of 4411.
Goldwater Office
To Be Opened Here
Citizens for Goldwater will
open local headquarters In the
vacant store between Miller's
Grocery Company and Hay
Street here within a week, Dr.
Walter White, chairman of the
committee, announced yes
terday,^.
White said the headquarters
will be open to the public. Any
one, he added, Interested In as
sisting In the Goldwater cam
paign or pledlng their support

drop by the local office.
TAG (Teenagers for Gold
water) will hold their weekly
meeting at the Goldwatc. head
quarters on Thursdays, White
said. The meetings supported
by the Citizens For Goldwater
organization, he said, are open

our American government.
Judge Moore
Pays Visit
To County
Judge Dan K. Moore, Demo
cratic gubernatorial candidate,
paid his third visit to Warren
County on Friday morning. He
was accompanied to the War
ren County Court House lawn,
where he remained for about an
hour, by a number of party
dignitaries.
Judge Moore was greeted by
Mayor W. A. Miles and Demo
cratic nominee for the State
House W. R. Drake upon his
arrival shortly after 9 o'clock.
Also present to welcome the
Moore party were his county
campaign co-chairmen James
Y. Kerr and Charles White, in.
Making the ride from the
Capital with Judge Moore were
Lt. Governor Nominee Bob
Scott, State Democratic Party
Secretary Mrs. L. Y. Ballen

Moore Coon Hound
When Democratic Guberna
torial Candidate Dan K. Moore
and his party left Warrenton on
last Friday they were accom
panied by a prize coon hound,
the gift of Roy Clark of Lit
tleton, Rt. 3, to Judge Moore.
The dog is a special one
and was designed for a special
place, according to Dick Kern of
The Roanoke Rapids News, who
says:
"It all started about five
months ago when this register
ed Smoky River Blue Tick coon
dog was born.
"Owner Roy Clark decided to
call the coon hound Dan Moore,
since he was backing Moore
In the governor's race.
"Roy called the dog Dan
Moore, but the dog didn't re
spond.
"This puzzled Roy no end.
He thought the dog might be
deaf.
"Then one day five-year-old
Jimmy called the dog, 'Gov
ernor' ? and the doe resDond
ed happily, Jumping all over
Jimmy In a triendly way.
"Roy said then, 'I've got It
all figured out He didn't
want to be called by Just his
name. . . .he wanted that Gov
ernor's title and now both
the dog and the man have it.' "
The puppy was one of three
that Roy had and he made plans
to give it to Judge Moore.
"Roy says heflgured 'the moun
tain man will want to do a little
coon hunting now and then. . .
and this dog will give him a
lot of help.'
"Jimmy and Janice (who is
three) hated to see their grand
father give Governor away but
feel hell enjoy life a lot more
in the Governor's mansion!"

X-Ray Mobile Units In County
? cnest X-ray mobile units
were placed In operation here
and over the county Tuesday
morning as the fall TB clinics
got underway. The units will
remain In Warren County
through October 24.
The buses will be open, Tues
day through Saturday, from 10
a. m. to 4 p. m. and will be
closed on Mondays.

partment, this service Is being
offered free to all citizens 15
years of age and older, Dr.
Robert F. Young, Warren Coun
ty Health Officer, pointed out
yesieraay.
The local TB Association
provides Christmas Seal funds
for salaries of secretaries on
the buses and for postage, while
the State Health Department
furnishes technical personnel,
equipment and films. The small
films will be Interpreted by
State Health Department phy
sicians, and the large follow up
films will be read by specia
lists at the Eastern State San
atorium.
The bus at the court house

ing the entire survey. Other
X-ray buses will fill appoint
ments over the county.
A mobile unit which opened
at the Wise Baptist Church
Thursday will reamln at this
site through next Wednesday.
