FRIDAY, JULY 9, 1965 NUMBER 28 Warren 4-H Members Win District Honors At Pinetops Meeting Warren County 4-H club members participated In fifteen activities last Thursday at Northeastern District Demon ^ stratlon Day held at South Edge combe High School, Plnetops. Participants In these activities received five blue ribbon*, three red ribbons and six white ribbons. Shirley Seaman and Claiborne Holtzmaii of the Ridgeway Com munity Club won a blue rib bon and first place In the dis trict on their vegetable mar keting demonstration. This award gives them an expense paid trip to 4-H Club Week In Raleigh July 26-30 where they will represent the North eastern District In state com petition. Phillip West of the Little ton Community Club won a blue ribbon and was runner-up In the dairy management demon stration competition. Jimmy Hecht of the Ridgeway Com munity Club tried his skill in the poultry barbecue contest where he won a blue ribbon and was declared second place winner In this competition." - Other Warren, County blue ribbon winners were In talent competition. One was Lee Burrows of the Ridgeway Club, playing drums. He was accom panied by Wade Schuster and Tommy Salmon. Lisa Coleman and Ernest Boyd Harris of the Inez Club presented a song skit, "Honey Bun," from "South Pa cific." They were accompanied by Mrs. Harry Williams, Jr. Red ribbons were won by Rachel Ingle of the Rldgeway Club for her dairy food dem onstration In Junior competi tion; Tommy Bender of the Rldgeway Club for his dem onstration In boy's electric competition; and Arlene and Laura Bender of the Afton Elberon - Vlcksboro Club for jthelr Illustrated lecture in the farmer cooperative competi tion. Linda Dlllard, vice president (See 4-H, page 3) Show-deo Is Success Club Members State The Warrenton Saddle Club's Show-deo held at the Currln arena here Sunday afternoon and night was yesterday declared to be highly successful. Allen King, publicity chair man for the sponsoring organi zation said that plans are al ready being made for an even bigger and better horse show this fall. A threat of rain failed to dampen either attendance or enthusiasm and the show, which began at 2 p. m., ran until around 10 o'clock Sunday night, with some 150 horses entered Into the 34 classes. King said that the Saddle Club members heard lots of comments from visitors from towns sponsoring such shows about the conduct of the War renton show. They were very complimentary, he said. Woodrow, the tough little mule, a feature attraction, was ridden, but for Just how many seconds Is not known. Earl Rlggan of Macon was the winner after a number of other would be-riders had hit the dust. In the bull riding contest, Curtis Danlel-of Lazy D. Arena of Halifax, Va., won first prize. The second prize was awarded to Syd Cooper of Henderson. Ralph Bagwell of Shady Lanes Stables, Garner, was the win ner In the Amateur Calf Rop ing contest; N. D. Sauls of Garner was winner In the pro fessional contest. George Parrlsh of Henderson was first place winner In the Fastest Horse Around the Ring contest; and Kay Fleming of Roanoke Rapids was second place winner. Coye Lewis, principal of the South Edgecombe High School for the past seven years, has been elected assistant superin tendent of the Warren County Schools, replacing J, Comer Griffin who resigned to accept a position in Martin County. Lewis Is a native of Pitt County. He is married to the former Miss Maggie Haddock of Hookerton, N. C. The Lewises have three children-ages seven, three and two. Lewis received his AB and MA Degrees, with majors In English, Social Studies and School Administration, from East Carolina College. He serv ed as a teacher at Chi cod School in Pitt County for three years; principal of Eureka School in Wayne County for two years; principal of the Pink Hill School In Lenoir County for two years. He is a mem ber of the Lions Club, Rurltan Warrenton Man Is Involved In Wreck A car driven by a Warren ton man was Involved In awreck 11 miles south of Louisburg on highway 401 around 18:48 a. m. Sunday. The accident occurred when a 1957 Olds driven by Offle Jef freys, Negro man of Hampton, Vs., sldeswlped a 1960 Ford driven by Charles L. Greer, 26-year-old white man of War renton. The Greer vehicle was towing a horse trailer and returning from a show In Raleigh. Both ears were considerably dam aged and Catherine Jeffreys, 44, Negro passenger in the Olds was taken to the Louis burg Hospital. Her injuries were not regarded as serious. Gets Federal Loan Littleton?The Littleton De velopment Corporation has re ceived official approval of aloan through the Small Business Ad ministration to be used in get ting the new industrial building completed and the operation of the new Industry, Jay-Too, Inc., under way. Carl L. Hoag, Manager of the new plant, has been here for several weeks laying the ground work for the new venture. He ?aid that the machinery for the company was being ordered, but there would be a six weeki delay In delivery which would delay the beginning of opera tions until about Sept. 1. Work on the office, rest rooms and lounge is underway. This addition will add about 1300 square feet to the original shell building. The cement floor has already been poured In the larger section. No Change Under Tentative Budget In Town Tax Rate Warrenton's tax rate will remain unchanged at $1.15 for the fiscal year 1965-66 under a tentative budget adopted by the board of commissioners last week. The general fund calls for a rate of 75$ and the bond fund 40? for the $1.15 total. The rate Is based on 90 per cent of collection on a valua tion of $2,816,521. In addition the poll rate will be $1.00based on 125 polls. Only $19,114 of the admin istrative budget of $91,085 Is to come from as valorem taxes and $20,822 for the bond fund. IN HOSPITAL Mrs. J. A. Dameron Is In R0x Hospital, Raleigh, for sur gery. Revival To Be Held At Sulphur Springs Revival services will be held at the Sulphur Springs Baptist Church the week of July 11 through July 16, the Rev. J. M. Long, pastor, announced yes terday. The Rev. Alvln B. O'Shlelds, pastor of the North Henderson Baptist Church, will be the guest minister. Music will be led by the church choirs. Sunday services will be at 11 a. m. and 7:30 p. m. Weekday services, Monday through Fri day, will be at 8 p. m. Mr. Long said the public;!* extended an invitation to attend these services. IN HOSPITAL Mr. J. T. Mltchlner has been a patient In Duke Hospital, Dur ham, since Thursday of last week. Mrs. Mltchlner has vis ited him there each day. Sheriff Davis To Keep Deputies; Hundley Is Register Of Deeds -Newly elected Warren Coun ty Sheriff Clarence A. Davis -announced on Tuesday afternoon that he would retain all three of former Sheriff Jim Hundley's deputies. ? The board of county commis sioners approved the re appointment of Bonnie Steven son at $350 a month; Lloyd Newsom at $310 a month, and Dorsey Capps at $210 a month. Davis was sworn In as sheriff by Mrs. Lanie Hayes, Clerk Mrs. Diamond Is President Of Auxiliary Mrs. Hy Diamond was install ed as president of the American Legion Auxiliary, unit 25, at a meeting held at the home of Mrs. A. A. Wood on Thursday night of last week. Installation officers was Mrs. K. C. Honeycutt of Hickory, newly elected president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of North Carolina, who also addressed the Auxili ary members as the first unit to be vlalted during her term of office. Mrs. Hayes also administer ed the oath of office to Regis ter of Deeds Jim H. Hundley, who began his new duties as clerk at the afternoon session of the board. The commissioners at their June meeting appointed Hundley as Register of Deeds after they received the resignation of Sam E. Allen, effective on July 6. Following the appointment of Hundley as Register of Deeds, the commissioners appointed Pictures on page 4 * Davis, a building contractor and former deputy sheriff, as Hund ley's successor as sheriff Allen, who was appointed Register of Deeds in September, 1937, and subsequently elected each four years thereafter, re ported statistic of his nearly 28 years In office. He reported total fees collected in the amount of $161,937.73; that he had Issued 6521 marriage licenses, approximately 22,500 birth certificates, 4,500 death certificates, and 3,500 delayed birth certificates. He said that he had traveled 106,500 miles during his term of office, mainly made up of the six miles of travel to and from his home at Axtelle each weekday during the terms of his office. The commissioners express ed their appreciation for the" service rendered the county by I Mr. Allen, and for his friend ship and expressed their re grets that they would no longer be closely associated with him. In turn Mr. Allen expressed his appreciation of serving with the commissioners and their friendship. He said that he would miss this association, but he felt that it was for the best Interest of the county for him to resign while he was in good health and able to carry on the duties of his office. Monroe Gardner, chairman of the Warren County Development Commission, appeared before the board to announce that the terms of three one-year mem bers of this committee has ex pired and to ask for their re election or the election of their successors for a three-year term. The commissioners re appointed Selby Benton and Joseph P. Newsom and appoint ed Mayor Graham P. Grisson of Norllna ax a successor to William Delbrldge, Delbrldge had requested that he not be reappointed. A, Miles and six members of the board of town commissioners were sworn In at a meeting of the commis sioners on Thursday night of last week. The seventh mem ber, Dixon Ward, who Is at ' tending school at Chapel HU1, was unable to be present. Taking the oath of office be fore Magistrate J. C. Moore were Mayor Miles and Com missioners a. D. Johnson, A. C. Fair, A. C. Blalock, Wiley O. Coleman, A. A. Wood and Thomas G ask 111. Coleman and Wood are new members of the board, suc ceeding Walker P. Burwell and W. L. Wood. Mayor Miles welcomed the new members and said he waa looking forward with pleasure to serving with the entire board. He also expressed his apprecia tion and that of the board for the fine services rendered by retiring members W. L. Wood and Walker Burwell. A. C. Fair was elected mayor pro-tem during the or ganisational meeting. Charles Johnson was elect ed town attorney, succeeding Frank Banzet, at a retainers fee of $1B0. A. C. Blalock waa re-elected the town'a director on the War renton Railroad Company, and A. D. Johnaon and A. C. Fair were elected to vote the town'* atock at the annual meetlnf of the stockholder! of the War renton Railroad Company. They were unlnatructed.
