Children Under 16
Not To Work On
Farms During School
Raleigh ? F irmera In thla
area *, jre reminded today that
children under 16 years of ace
are permitted to work on farms
only outalde school hours, un
der federal law.
This word came from Julian
C. Parker, field office super
visor of the Raleigh- East office
of the Wage and Hour and Public
Contracts Divisions, U. S. De
partment of Labor. He said the
Fair Labor Standards Act pro
hibits minors under 16 from
working In agriculture during
school hours for the school
district where they live while
working. This applies to child
ren of migratory workers as
well as local children.
"The place for children is
In school, not In the fields,"
Parker added. "Today's child
ren will grow up in the world
which demands more education ^
and better skills. Schooling now
will open the door to oppor
tunity in the future."
Parker pointed out that the
16-year age minimum does not
apply to children who work
on the home farm for their
parents or guardians. He also
said the Act places no restric
tions on farm work by minors
16 years old or over.
Compliance with the Fair La
bor Standards Act does not ex
cuse noncompliance with State
or local laws.
"The Wage and Hour Office
in Raleigh will be gl. to ans
wer . any questions about
the Fair Labor Standards
Act," Parker added. The ad
dress is Room 203, 320 South
Salisbury Street, Raleigh, North
Carolina.
