Soil Test Leads To Good Growth Mr. and Mrs. Otis Coleman of the Areola Community took a soli test and it is truely pay ing dividends on the quality and quantity of their tobacco. If your crop fs not growing as well as It should, having a soil test made on the affect "* nH" "f<rn aliln rlrtrrm lnlng what Is causing the poor growth, states L. C. Cooper, Negro Agricultural Extension Agent. A new Information sheet for soil samples from "problem areas" has been developed by the Soil Testing Division of the N. C. Department of Agricul ture. The new sheet was de veloped to speed up processing of samples from problem areas and to give agronomists more Information so as to better di agnose the reason for poor growth. Use of the new sheet which Is now available at your County Extension Office will give priority to soli samples from problem areas. These samples will be processed and analyzed as rapidly as possible so that corrective measures can be applied to the growing crop. Of course, not all problems resulted In poor crop growth are caused by the misuse or need for lime and/or fertilizer. Insect or disease Infestations are often at fault. But if a nutritional deficiency of Im balance Is suspected, a soli test can often aid In the diag nosis of the problem. According to the Soli Testing Division, a large percentage of the samples from problem areas show a great need for lime. This Is unfortunate since effective corrective liming measures are difficult to make once the crop Is growing, Cooper said. Lime takes some time to react with the soil. It should be applied well in ad vance of planting time and thoroughly mixed with the soli [or best results. By having your soli tested well In advance of planting your crop, lime and Fertilizer needs can be deter mined early, if this Is done, many of the problem areas showing poor growth can be pre sented. A soil test Is the best way to determine whether or lot lime Is needed. If lime Is leeded the soli test report will Uso Indicate how much should :>e applied.
